I'm new to knife making and am grinding my first fixed blade knife. I've done the flat grind but am not sure if I need to grind the edge before or after heat treating. What is the best approach? thanks
Here is a link to a sticky thread with info for new makers. I'm not sure if the answer to your question can be found there but it is worth a look. ***Newbies , Good info Here***
I don't know what steel you are using but you want to leave some thickness at the edge. If it is ground down to a thin edge then it can warp and crack during heat treat and quenching. I would leave it about the thickness of a dime and then after it is heat treated and tempered then grind your final edge and sharpen.
