Alrighty folks, what is your technique? Do you do it before the primary edge, after, or post heat-treating? Can you hollow it, hold it vertical, or flat on a platen?

Basically, tell me everything you know. :D

I grind mine after I grind the primary and grind it just like the primary (most before HT and finish after)
I suppose you can hollow grind it but I flat grind everything so what do I know!

The reason I do it after the primary is that I use it to finish out the tip. Otherwise my tips almost always end with a very tiny flat on the point.

Becareful on the finish grind though, this is where I most often get the dreaded BLUE SPOT!

I'm anxiously awaiting some responses too, since I have ruined more than a few blades by trying to grind a swedge on.

That is the very last thing that I do ( after heat treating). I hold the blade verticality on a 4" contact wheel.

You can grind the top grind before or after your main grind, depending on what type lines you are after.A small wheel if you are hollow grinding really
brings the lines out,I use a 3 inch wheel and I get a deep hollow
going. The tips are tricky, were the two lines met, pratice on some scrap steel before going on your real knife, thing get ugly fast
:)

Thanks all for the help -- btw, things get ugly in my shop fast anyway! :D

You are doing nice work from what I have seen so far
I am sure you will nail it with a little pratice
it is really no differnt than hollow grinding your main bevel
the only thing that is tricky is to bring the two grinds together
evenly on both sides.

:)

I grind it first, edge up, usually with an 8" wheel, I grind to completion, and I carry the bevel down into the main bevel area. When I grind the main bevel, I bring the line up to where I want it.
