I was dove tailing some 3/16" ti today and learned something. When I started grinding it I had my grinder kicked up pretty fast cause that's the speed my 36 grit belts work best at but after a little bit I noticed I wasn't making much progress and was creating a lot of heat. I figured I'd try slowing down the grinder and backed it all the way down to the slowest it would go and tried again. Man, that ti ground off like anything. I couldn't believe it. You'd think the faster the belt moved across the metal the faster it would eat it away but not so with ti.
So the moral to the story is, slower is better when grinding thick ti!
