Just recieved my Fall 2003 Master Catalog from Cabela's. They are offering both the Griptilian and Mini with BT2 coated D-2 blades; PE and CE edges! The Grips just got even BETTER!

Where have I been? First I've heard about these. Anyone have, or have further info on availability? A Cabela exclusive???

Nice! I have always thought of the grips as good quality knives made by a great company, but would never buy them because their bladesteel was IMO inferior.

Why is 440C an inferior steel? It's not VG-10 or any of the powdered steels but it holds it's own in the pocket knife industry. I am excited about the D2 version though, but mostly because I really love the steel and the edge it can take.

On Cabela's web site, the full size D2 Grip sells for about $15.00 LESS than the 440C Mini they offer. The D2 Mini is $20.00 less than the 440C.

I ordered the full size D2, it checked out at $69.99 plus 7.95 shipping. They listed it as being "In Stock"

I agree with Jazzman, ain't nuthin wrong with 440C. Absolutely NO complaints with my 440 Grips!

Where are you guys seeing this? I looked at the website and the master catalog and still cant find it.

Thanks for the link dullone. Do you know what page its on in the catalog? I have the first edititon.

JMO. It certainly isn't VG-10 or any of the powdered steels like you said, and it isn't ATS-34 or 154-CM. 440C is basically near the bottom of cutlery steels that knifeknuts will accept. It does it's job, but why should I use it when, for the same price or less, I can get steels that perform better? Having handled it before I can say I love the AXIS lock, and I think it's great they put it on a cheaper knife...but for the money there are way better performing knives, IMO.

Yes there are better performing steels, but I take more than the blade steel into consideration. I don't care if it's the best blade ever created, if the rest of the knife sucks it doesn't matter. The Griptillian is one of the best all around price/performance combos going.

Of course, as do I. Me and Jazzman where talking just about 440C steel though, not the rest of the knife.

Yes, I know, but it seems nuts to me to pass up on a great using knife because the blade steel is "inferior", when it's actually nowhere near bad. I'd pass up on a great blade with bad handle before a great handle with a still decent blade. :) Just me though.

Yea, I know what you mean. I would normally think that too, but I'll give you a little backround on me, then you'll see.

I'm a 17 year old that lives with parents who don't like knives and place restrictions on how many can be purchased per year. (2 a year, multitools don't count.)

:grumpy: So as you can see when you have a choice of two knives a year...buying a Delica with better performance for your buck and a handle that fits my hand perfectly seems alot more attractive.:)

proper heat treat can be as important as steel type. Several people have posted that the 440c used in the grips is really good stuff. I'm not sure what the concensus is on BM's D2 however. But can it be worse than the 440c? Seems doubtful.

Benchmade's D2 has a great reputation. Alot of their limeted edition knives feature D2 blades.

Received the D2 bladed 551 Griptilian I ordered. I think this knive has beat out my Sere 2k and s30v Millie as the sharpest factory edge I've ever bought. Perfect grinds. I'm very :D pleased with it. BM got it right!

I agree - my Benchmade Limited Edition Ares knives with D2 steel are very sharp. I really like BM's D2 blades.
