Grip tape?

I have seen mentioned now and then something referred to as grip tape. I am looking for something grippy, not abrasive like skateboard tape, to put on a kydex sheath to keep it inside a pocket when the knife is drawn.

I am not a tinkerer, handyman, hobbyist, so I need to know what to look for, what to call it and where to buy it, please.

Thanks.

Actually, the stuff skateboarders use will work great. Even though it's a bit abrasive, it holds well. Try a little on the lower portion of a rifle magazine with gloves on in the dead of winter...no slipping and the mag stays right where you want it (in your hand), even when wet or covered in snow.

I've looked at hardware stores and the stuff for steps and saftey strips is too thick, but the skateboard stuff is thinner and holds it's grit well.

Lee Valley has a selection of high friction tapes. They are online and email active.

There are non skid textured rubber adhesive pads made for the bottoms of womens shoes available at K Marts, and other variety stores. They are approximately 3 x 2 sized and available in any color as long as it is grey. Look in the section where they sell the Kiwi brands polishes. I' ve used these for the pocket clips and opposite scale area near its pivot pins on a few of my folders. They do facilitate a more secure and faster draw. Depending on the materials and thicknesses of you pants linings, this grey stuff may in fact help to pull them out rather than steady the sheath!

Friction tape comes in a few grades. The typical "skateboard" type is highly abrasive as it was meant to be. The latest variation I' ve used is more of a "pebbly" texture rather than a "sandy/ glass" like type. I haven' t tried it on any of my pocket sheaths but I' d imagine if it was carried enough it would still cause a little wear but only a slower.

E mail me your address Jim and I' ll gladly send you some gratis for exchange of being the "guinea pig". How' s that?

Hey Guys...

Look for product called "Magic Wrap" its like electrical tape, but rubbery and fuses to itself. After about and hour it becomes a solid piece..

I use something similar for electrical applications.

All you do is cut the length you need..Very stretchy,, then peel the protective film and stretch while you wind it around whatever.

After awhile it bonds to itself then fuses together chemically..

Works great on many applications,, but will degrade if petrolium products come in contact with it...It easily and cheaply replaced when needed..

They sale the same grip tape for stairs and walkways at any hardware stores. You said you are not a hobbyiest, but you might have to invest in a exacto razor. The material are sold in sheets, so you might have to do some detail cutting.

Instead of tape have you considered using a static cord?Tie a length of paracord to the end of your sheath and loop the other end around a belt loop above your pocket. When you draw, the knife and sheath both come out of your pocket till the sheath reaches the end of the cord at which point the knife pops out of the sheath which is left dangling from your anchor point.

I use a non-skid pad material made for use under rugs or the drawer liner stuff made to put in the bottoms of silverware drawers to keep stuff from moving about. Don't know the brand name, but Walmart and other discounters carry it. Mine came in a roll of about 25 feet or so and is beige. I cut off a piece, wrap the sheath with it and secure with rubber bands. If it doesn't work well I haven't altered my sheath and whats left can be used around the house. The rug anti-skid stuff is thicker, but all I can find up here is white which stands out like #$%^.

Ex skate punk here...

Grip tape comes in different grades -- some of the stuff will tear a hole in a Nike in about half an hour. BUT, there was this stuff called Fly Paper (circa late eighties) that gripped like mad but had almost no roughness. Call a skate shop that is established and ask for something like "the old Fly Paper." If you catch an old timer, he'll lead you in the right direction.

Sorry, I don't have any of that stuff left or I'd send ya some...

Cheers,

I would just sew some velcro 'loop' material (the stuff that is soft and doesn't collect thread) to the inside of your pocket. I would glue some velcro 'hook' material (the plastic bristly stuff) to the sheath. This will be more secure than grip tape. The loop material is soft and won't be a problem in your pocket.

If sewing seems too much of a challenge, you can buy fabric adhesive and glue the loop material to the inside of the pocket. You can buy the velcro and the rest of the stuff at a fabric store. You can also buy material that is low-slip (for keeping shirts tucked in) at fabric stores. It will be sort of like chamois.

Dann,

Bought some Agrip a long time ago. It’s meant to drag on skin, not on cloth. At the time, I was looking for something to cause some drag on the shoulder strap of a Filson Field Bag. It’s a great material for a knife handle, but it doesn’t seem to cause any grippy drag of the sort I would need in my pocket.

Great stuff, though.

Dann: I had AGRIP in a fixed blade. I really liked it. It finally peeled off after a year and a half of sweat and living in the tropics. I will get more. The only problem area is that you have to very precisely cut it for your handle. Any left over will get dirty and peel up the rest. As stated before, and exacto knife will do it. Maybe a sewing shop of something similar can help.

Hope this helps.

Doug

Does anyone else here use skateboard tape on the clips of their knives? I outfitted the clip of my CQC6 with some, and the difference was dramatic in terms of grip. And hey, it also makes a field-expedient nail file!
