I am new to this forum. I recently received a Service NO 1 as a retirement gift from my team. What a neat knife. I never paid attention to the khukuri before. It would have been an excellent substitute for a machete with the added utility as a weapon-probably would mount good on the side of the ruck, but my field days are over unless WWIII breaks out. I love the knife but the grip seems to be just a bit too small-it digs a little into the palm. If I choke up, it doesn't feel as secure. My next purchase will probably be the WWII model-is the grip better/longer/more comfortable? What about the finger grip model?-just looking for opinions-can't check one out at the local store. This is a great forum.

Hello, Dave, and welcome to the forum. What a fine gift from a thoughtful bunch of co-workers. The SN1 is the actual khukuri issued to the Gurkhas; the real deal instead of something similar. Accordingly, the grip is made for them, which averages about 5' 3" tall. I think this explains the grip, and I hear that all handles aren't exactly the same size. Yes, the WW2 handle is proportionally bigger. I haven't experienced a Finger Grip model; maybe someone who does will speak up.

You might consider these options: Talk to Craig and see if he has some SN1's with bigger handles. The Gurkhas are known to tape their khukuri grips, and some folks use a narrow acewrap and tape on top. There are lots of types of these things out there, so feel free to experiment (you can search the old threads to see what others have done, too). You might NOT want to do anything irreversible to it, though. It's neat to have the authentic Gurkha khukuri, and in time you'll appreciate it just the way it is. At least that's the way it was with me. Hoping to hear from you again soon.

BTW, if you have any interest in khukuris at all, you'll be AMAZED to see how they're made. Gurkha Steel is an incredible video and a great value. Take care and make yourself at home....Dan

Lt Dan-Thanks. I wouldn't part with it-maybe get a second one though. I will soon order "Gurka Steel".
See you on the high ground.
