Hey,

First of all, I just want to say that I won't be held liable for anything -so if you choose to do the following you're on your own.

I've recently converted my Benchmade Griptilian so that it works like it has the Emerson "Wave" feature -and the best part is that it isn't permanent. I have a folder that I Dremeled -and it looks like cr*p now and I've seen this done before with a cable tie, but not with this exact setup -so I thought I'd share my version of the aftermarket "wave."

So here goes:

1. You remove the thumb stud. With the edge of the blade in water (to protect the temper) heat the thumstud for approx. 5 secs (a butane cigarette lighter works well) weakens the glue. Then use two T6 Torx drivers to remove the thumbstud (you can get these at Sears).

2. Fit the cable ties (zip ties) as shown in the picture. I'm using the 6" ones, Gardner Bender part #46-206, you can get them at Ace Hardware, Lowes, etc. for around $4.

3. Finished. The cable tie that is flat against the blade acts as a thumstud -so it can be installed on the other side if you're lefthanded. It also prvents the "catcher" ziptie from rotating out of the way.

It works every time, doesn't tear up your jean pockets, can be manually opened and removed without any damage. It even works in the cross-draw position if you carry your knife in your waistband.

PLUS, it should work with every folder on the market that clips to your pocket "tip-up" -as long as you can remove the thumbstud.

Have fun!

IMO, the Griptilian is perfect for this as the axis lock is very smoooth....

Hmm. It seems that would be worse to get in and out of the pocket than regular studs.

Neat Idea but I think it looks worse than factory. I guess if you really want the wave that's a good cheap option.

;)

John, I really like the Ritter, the blade geometry is really nice -the knife seems bigger in person, however it is still very precise and useful. The S30V comes sharper than most Benchmades out of the box, stropping on leather with Chromium Oxide puts on a very fine edge. Overall an excellent design in all respects.

Joe, you're right it looks like a$$ -but it works. Going in your pocket, it's no different than a standard RSK, but coming out it opens with a positive "clack." I also like the cable tie as it doesn't snag your pocket, it moves just enough so that it opens the blade -but doesn't yank your pocket out of your jeans or tear it off. It works pretty good, but unfortunately scares people who don't expect it (one second your hand's in your pocket, next second there's this large knife in it). It opens like a switchblade with balls.
