Griptilian blade tightness when blade is 4/5 closed

I have two mini griptilians, one 555-1 and one normal 556. In both knives, when I have the knife open, and then I fold it closed, the the blade is loose and easily folded the first 4/5 of the way closed. But then the blade becomes harder and harder to close (not difficult to close but you can feel more force is required). This increased tension comes solely from the blade and not the lock bar because I can feel the increased tension even when I pull the axis bar all the way back so the blade never touches it while closing.

On my 555-1 it is much more noticeable. Sometimes the blade does not even close all the way and remains a few mm out even though the axis bar with omega spring is pushing on the blade to close.

I know the pivot is not overly tight because the blade can fall shut 4/5 of the way with a light wrist flick until that point at which I need to push it in myself. Also if I loosen the pivot any more, significant blade play will be noticed.

I have tried cleaning the knife and re-lubricating the pivot and washers to no avail. Are there any other suggestions? This problem seems to be only present on my griptilians as I feel no difference is tightness throughout the entire closing of a 940 that I also own.

while i’ve never seen it myself, i’ve heard of problems like this being caused by the stop pin not being seated properly, so that the gap between the scales/liners is wider at the stop pin that it is at the pivot. this can pinch the blade as you close it, causing the blade to bind up as you close it. you can to see if the distance between the scales is the same at the stop pin and the top of the blade channel. to correct it i would loosen all tge body screws then retighten them starting with the stop pin screws first. you’ll probably have to readjust the pivot once you’re done, but from what i understand this should eliminate the issue if that’s what’s causing it.

i don’t know how well that comes across but hopefully it helps.

Any chance these are brand new (apart from being disassembled) and just haven't broken in yet?

I've had some BMs start out a bit stiff, but inside of two weeks every one of them has broken in nicely.

Thanks so much!! That actually fixed it. It was, as you said, the stop pin that was not pushed into the metal liners enough. To fix it, I just had to use some pressure to try to push the stop pin into the metal liners a little more so the distance between the scales at the stop pin isn't further out than the distance between the scales towards the other side o of the handle. That little bit of pressure onto the stop pin fixed the problem.

Thanks again :)

awesome, i’m glad that fixed it for you. like i said i’ve never had the problem but it’s come up before with that fix. i can’t remember if it was here or on benchmade’s forum. possibly both. quick question, were both of the grips you mentioned misaligned? or was it just the -1? seems like you won the funky knife issue lotto if so

Actually both of my grips were luckily centered. But I've had 3 940's and all of them have had centering issues. On the other hand, all of the 940's I've had have been quite smooth, while both of the grips I have had a slight tightness issue.

sorry, i wasn’t very clear. was asking if both your grips had the same issue with the stop pin. sounds like they did
