Finally broke down and got a griptilian... I assumed it was a plain edge when the guy at the counter gave it to me, but the store was closing and I was around 2-1/2 hours away from home at the closest cabela's, so i was kinda rushing to get out, but when I got to the car, I got it out of the box to find that he had given me the combo edge version. So here's the question-i'm gonna be back there this weekend and am trying to decide whether I should return it for the plain edge, or just keep the combo since I've already got it... any input appreciated, never really messed with combo edge EDCs

I have little to no need for a combo edge so I would wait the week out and exchange. Guessing the same might be true for you given you went expecting to get a non-combo edge.

It's really just a matter of preference. If you have experience with plain-edge and none with combo-edge, it may be worth keeping to try out and see if you like it. For EDC, I prefer plain edge. I haven't had an issue with needing the more aggressive cutting/tearing of serrations for my EDC uses, and a plain edge is easier to sharpen (granted, you might not need to sharpen the combo edge as often...).

It's a personal preference. I personally like and use the combo edge. I often have to cut hard plastic like PVC and the combo edge works great. Most of my Benchmades are combo edge. The two mini grips with Doug Wilkins scales don't get carried for work. Or the Aphid at the bottom.

I think i'll probably end up keeping it, purely because I want to carry it too bad to wait and take it back lol... plus it's something new. how bad are the serrations to sharpen??

I am currently set up with this. I haven't used it on a quality knife yet but I have been practicing with cheap serrated kitchen knives. I seems to work better than the two old needle files I got at a yard sale. Though YMMV with it. I would try it on a cheaper knife first.

BTW, I LOVE my combo edge grip. It is one of my favorite knives.

I had a post a while back about cheap knives. In it someone pointed out how they go through the stores supply and hand select their knife carefully looking for blade centering, blade play etc.

The next time I buy a knife at a brick and mortar I plan on doing this. Just something to consider. :)
