Hi all,

I'm doing my first self install of custom scales on my new M4 mini grip tonight and I'm a little nervous. I've watched a youtube vid, and I have my torx set and some blue 242 loctite ready. I just don't want to screw up my new beauty. Any tips I should consider beforehand? Thanks for the input.

take your time its very easy to do. when you go to put the blade back in hold back the axis lock the blade will go in easier

This ^^
Also, I find have the blade in the open position when removing the scales prevents the blade being scratched on the liners or edge digging in. Thin cardboard, like a match book flap or business card can help push the washers into place. I use the torx driver to align all the holes.

I use a broken toothpick; part of it to hold the Axis bar open (threaded through) and the tip portion to move the washers back in place.

It's been an utter disaster so far. I'm pretty sure my bit set has stripped two of the liner screws. My pretty knife is in pieces and I don't think it will ever be right.

Are you using a T6 for the liner and clip screws?
I can get it right for you if your comfortable shipping it to me. I even have some extra screws.

I'm pretty sure my cheap torx set stripped the screws. I got all the screws out except for two of the liner ones. They weren't coming out so I decided to put it back together and get a nicer torx set in the morning but then I couldn't get the darn pivot back in. I'm so frustrated I threw away the set and put everything away for now. This is not what I wanted to do to this knife. Really glad I got a back up one.

The pivot is the most annoying part. Have to get the blade and the washers lined just right. First time is the hardest.

The stripped screws are going to be a problem. I'll have to get new ones and the blade and washers will need a cleaning and relube for all the sliding about that was happening. I just hope it isn't a lost cause.

I've contacted Benchmade's warranty department after having stripped the pivot screw (trying to break the Loctite) and one of the handle screws on one of my Grips. They sent me a full set of replacement screws for the knife.

If the screws are still stuck, you can try to cut a slot in them using Dremel, and then use a flat-head screwdriver to get it out. If the Loctite is still intact, you can also try applying a little heat (using something like a soldering iron) to soften it up. Unfortunately, the screw extractors kits all seem to be too big to fit any of the handle screws (I've tried a couple different sets that looked like they might be small enough). Sometimes saturating it with WD-40 can also help get it un-stuck.

As for general re-assembly tips... Put a piece of tape over the blade edge (to avoid accidental cuts). I use the stem from a Q-tip to hold the Axis lock open when re-assembling (a bit thicker than a toothpick, and it gets the Axis lock out of the way a little better). I also use a toothpick to help thread the pivot tube back through the handle scales, liner, washers, and blade. It can be handy to help make slight adjustments to the washers if they slide around a little. When tightening the handle screws, don't over-tighten. They should be snug, and you'll want to use some Loctite to keep them from slipping. That was one of my main frustrations when trying to get the blade centered. Thought it was pivot-related, but it actually turned out to be the handle screws at the base of the handle.

You'll get it sorted out eventually. Call BM they should send you a couple new screws at no cost.
Or find'em online or at a hardware store or something (I don't actually know if you can get them at these places).

Well I eventually got it assembled. The qtip trick was invaluable. I stil have one handle with two completely stripped screws, but hey, I got one of them 100% perfect. Guess I'll figure out what to do with my backup model later. I love my new scales.

Well, it's nothing too exciting. I prefer my users to look like users.

I ordered my scales from Cuscadi and I tried to get ones that I thought would be what a standard grip should come with. I went with textured black g10 and a smooth black g10 backspacer.

looks great. glad you got it all buttoned up again.

Thanks!

I am also happy. I was so distraught before, now I am beyond happy because it turned out perfect. I will figure out how to fix the other one later, just basking in my new user edc perfection at the moment.

It's a good, clean appearance. Functional, yet somewhat subdued. I like it. Hope it serves you well!

Thanks! I'm really loving it. I've gotten past the axis lock break in period and its just flicking out like a champ. I'm very happy with my piece. Of course it won't win any beauty contests but I'd put her against any piece in a user challenge.

Again, thanks for the qtip trick input, saved my bacon.
