Call me stupid but I always thought that the griptilian handles were made of some kind of rubber. I guess i just imagined that such a famous grip would be made of some kind of high-friciton stuff, like a rubber. I just found out it was plastic. What does it feel like? it has to be lighter than i thought now, any comments?

thanks

A lot of people recently have been bringing up the Griptilian handles. For an AXIS lock knife, under $70, you still cannot go wrong. Personally I don't have one but I'm about to order one from NGK. I have handled them probably 10 times, the local Bass Pro Shop probably hates me, because everytime I'm there I ask to handle one. Anyways, they are lightweight, but tough handles. I have never heard of them breaking or cracking. If you want something more grippy you could add some friction tape or step up to a TSEK AXIS or AFCK AXIS, they run from $90 to $115. I have heard some talk of new handles on the Griptilian coming out, but it's just rumors and I don't think it's true. If somebody could confirm or deny that, thanks.

I was also sceptical at first (loving the Ti liner/G-10 scales of my BM800-AFCK)BUT the Griptilian won me over as soon as I handled one and I immediately bought it.The knife is not "plasticky" but rather light weight and the ergonomics are excellent;with the steel liners ,strength would not be an issue and the GTX is chemicaly stable, lightweight and durable. The excellent AXIS lock and the very good BM440C make an excellent package. The Ritter Griptilian (with S30V steel)is the only improvement I can see on this well-designed/well-executed knife-well suited for EDC. ;)

$45? Maybe you ordered the mini-Griptillian? The full size is 4-5/8" closed; the mini is 3-7/8".

No, I got the full size one. I got it off the auction site. I think cuz it's got the Olive handle it wasn't popular. After awhile in my motorcycle tool box I'm sure it'll LOOK black anyway. For $46 shipped I couldn't pass it up.....

Sweet. I wouldn't have minded olive-colored; I mainly bought for the lock.

I just got the 553 with Tanto blade $53US - my first Benchmade folder and my first Tanto. Impressed - don't know what I am going to do with it yet but I'll think of something.

I find the griptillian handle to be far more ergonomic and secure than the flat G 10's on other similar knives that cost substantially more. If one wants a knife for use in dressing out fish and game where blood and slime are going to be present, that "plastic" handle is a lot better than a classier micarta or g 10. For use in cold conditions (I'm in alaska), the worst handle is a metal one.

Well, it feels like plastic. The scales are the only knock I have against my Ritter Grip. It's a great knife otherwise. If I ever lose this one I will buy another with no second thoughts.
