Found this video interesting. I was very surprised the axis lock appears to fail during batoning. Always seemed this lock was nearly foolproof. I know you guys are going to say WTF is he batoning with it, especially a folder. I always liked the full size grip. Funny how at the end he says he's a spydie fan but still prefers the Grip over the Manix. Wish he would have done the same workout with the Manix.

Surprising video. I thought the Axis locks would hold up better than the one in the video did. I still say it's hard to beat the Tri-Ad lock!!

Not supposed to baton with it locked open, you're supposed to unlock the lock and then baton with the knife. Not sure what the heck is with people these days trying to test folding knives as a fixed blade? WTF?

I hate to beat this dead horse any longer, but... Doug Ritter, who designed his own version of the Benchmade Griptilian, and batonned with it IIRC, said that batonning a sturdy folder isn't that big of a deal, in as many words... This was sometime back but it seems he would do so with the blade locked open. FWIW.
I think technique will make or break, as it were.

I am with you on this one, plus: The lockup failed? Then he locks the blade open again and uses it? mmmm, knife is not useless, plus, axis lock is the only lock you can jam a piece of wood behind the lock and it will keep the blade open without the lock moving.

Failed lockup means for me: Lock is rendered useless, ie, cant hold the blade open when pressure is applied to spine (think slipjoint). Not the case with this lock, so the lock probably slipped due to the vibrations from batoning.

I still liked the video nun the less. Like to see people do stuff with their knives and compare to what I have done with mine, sometimes very different findings though.

The video was good quality as well and well edited. I would like to see more.

While I'm not one for going to the woods batoning folders. I thought the video was edited nicely and the reviewers did a good job of presenting the knife.

I have had a similar "failure" with the same model of that knife, my experience is that if its clogged with lint it will be more likely to fail in that sort of scenario, however the actual locking mechanism wasn't damaged. After seeing this video I may buy me another 551 but plain edge this time.

Jankerson may very well be the thorn in many manufacturers side. Trust should be given to manufacturers also as they had their own tests and would not put out a product that includes massive safety recalls. I think his tests are not real world tests, but more SHTF tests. If I'm going out in the woods, it's a nice combo of a large fixed blade, axe, and saw, with no folder to be seen for miles.

I just watched the video, and the Lock-up fail part multiple times.

It seemed to me that he kept pressure on the handle while batoning and the lock moved back a little bit each time he hit it, so it seems to me, that he just somehow managed to actually unlock it.

Watch that part a couple times and let me know what yall think. ever since I got my first Axis lock, I will swear by them...but that is beside the point

Great vid. I think you have to expect some level of failure when using a folder for extremely hard tasks (like batoning.)
