This was posted by a forum member (Ankerson)here, and who knows he may have posted it on BF, but I was tooling through his channel and saw this, and was blown away. I thought that Grip would snap instantly. Who needs overbuilt!

Here's the original test

and a BM vid I found while going down the rabbit hole. Too bad the girl isn't in it longer

I watched other hard use Grip tests and they really gave me a new appreciation for those hollow handles

Very nice! I have never seen those videos. I never really liked the griptillian until I bought one. Such great knives. I will own another one again some day.

The videos were very impressive. I liked the way that 154cm cut through that tanned leather. And, the FRN stood up pretty well, even with Jim Ank bouncing up and down on it... Decent folder.

If only the Mini Grip was a bit larger. It is too small and the Grip is too big for me personally. Delica has better handle size but not trying to drum up a BM vs Spyderco thread for sure. Those always end well.

I haven't held a regular grip, but I agree. If my 556 was a hair longer… Haha, great knife though!

The Grip is a great knife. I carry mine often. Nothing fancy, nothing overbuilt, just a good clean design in an affordable package. I still think its a $70 knife and is $20 overpriced, but its still a great knife for the money.

Like most people, I would rather see them priced around $70, but even at the $90 area, how many other knives can you think of that will withstand that much torture ?
Yes, you can buy knives from other makers that perhaps look fancier, and don't have "plastic" scales, but thee aren't a lot that are as tough as the Griptilian

The last video, I want that guys job!

Agreed. Granted he was a BM employee, but I have vowed to myself that if I ever come into a ton of cash, I will have a legit knife test channel on Youtube that is hosted by attractive women who are knife literate, or at least can believably fake it. It would be great to have a place where knives like the Grip went through the same standardized testing as overbuilt ZTs, G2G Emersons, and CRKs. I wonder if we'd all be shocked by the results, and/or it would change any buying habits???

I need to get mine a new blade. I have used the crap out of it. Guy at Ross Cutlery in LA f*cked up my blade while sharpening it. I wont get serrations again.

$30 will replace a satin blade, $40 for black coated.

I have never done it, but a buddy recently broke the tip on his knife and sent it in for a replacement. The entire process was a breeze, and $30 is reasonable cost for that service in my opinion.

And yes, serrations generally suck. I only have one knife, a Contego, with serrations and for its purpose I don't mind the serrations, but they don't add any functionality to the knife. It is strictly a backup self defense weapon I carry at work.

Sounds like Ross Cutlery in LA needs to give you $30 for a new blade. Got a picture or more details? You have peaked my curiosity.

My 'strops' are the exact same leather impregnated with compound. When I'm done honing I do "the paper test" for sharpness through the leather. No big deal, given that I just sharpened it. BUT...

A month or so ago I was doing roof work. To clear the tree overgrowing we had. A Milwaukee sawzall, a well used chainsaw, my pocket chainsaw, and my grip. When the time came to cut down the limbs the tools we used were Grip for anything under half-inch and the pocket chainsaw for anything over. The wood was green so the Milwaukee was useless and the gas chainsaw needed a sharpening. After hacking away at branches to get them in the leaf bag, my buddy asked if I had destroyed my knife. I shaved my arm hair and did the 'paper test to the end of my belt. "NOPE"

I know this says more about the steel 154cm, than it does Benchmade, but they did pick it. I doubt my VG10 blades would have held up as well to the same abuse, and I love(d) VG10.

I find it funny that the Grips are rated by some people as overrated and yet, it's one of THE go to knives for people that use them. I have to admit the Noryl handles feel cheap, but after using the knife I can justify spending money on upgraded scales. And the knife would have cost much more had Benchmade used G10, but we've seen that the cheaper noryl isn't that bad.

Supersteels and Titanium are nice. But an EDC should perform, but not be so precious that you cry if you lose it. Mine cost me 100 Canadian then (now 75ish American). With the scales, I'm close to double the cost but I think the knife is worth it. It's a good value knife, not perfect, but very good value

n.b. If I lose my 550 after replacing the scales, i will show some emotion.

The Noryl handles are what I hate about the Grip. That being said, it is the knife I reach for if I need a serious folder. I can't picture myself without a Grip somewhere in my collection.

Yea the scales always bothered me, but realistically from a functioning standpoint, there's nothing wrong with them

That cash also gets you Benchmade's warranty which is a great value! :)

yup, BM's warranty and customer service is the best in the business bar none. I bought a 810 Contego from them and it arrived with a broken glass breaker. I called BM, they emailed me a paid overnight Fedex Express label to ship the knife back. Four days later I got it back fixed.

I'm sure to be in the minority but I really like the feel of the standard Grip scales.

+1 people underestimate the factory grips.

I agree. I think people get so wrapped up in all the Ti and G10 for handle scales today that they tend to overlook how good something simple works. I have no issues with the Griptilian scales. I have had some Putman g10 and while they were great, they were not necessary leaps and bounds better than the stock scales.
