Hello All.

I am most likely going to get my sister a Mini Griptillian for her birthday. I have a full size one and she likes it. Before I make the purchase, I want to show her someother knives in that price range. So any suggestions on $50-$60 folders with 3" blades would be appreciated. She prefers studs to holes, so I guess Spydercos are out. Thanks everyone.

Most women do. ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Anyway, a Camillus EDC is a damn fine knife for the money. If you're looking for FRN handles, there's the HEAT, but IMO $50 for the EDC and 154CM is a much better deal than $50 for AUS-6 (the HEAT's blade might be a bit large at 3.75"). Cold Steel (medium Voyager series) and SOG (Flashes, Autoclips) make decent FRN handled knives for around $50, but IMO it's hard to beat a Spyderco Delica FRN or Griptillian for every-day-use. The Camillus EDC is an excellent knife, but perhaps not as comfortable in the hands as the Grip.

I know this is contrary to your purpose for posting, but... I'd just stick with a Griptillian. You know she likes it and, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". My $.02 :D

Second the Camillus EDC. It is also quite a slim knife. Looks quite unique too. Your sister may well appreciate its looks more than that of the Mini Grip, which to the uniniated, is well, a folding knife. Nice colour choices for the Mini Grip though. Could be colour coordinated with her wardrobe?

If she already likes your Griptillian, then why open a can of worms? Get yourself a Ritter Griptillian in S30V and give her your current one. Or keep your current one and show her the available color choices of the various 556 models.

But since you asked:

Fallkniven's U2 looks pretty cool.

Frankly, for not being able to consider Spyderco, I think you should save the knife money and invest in family counselling as soon as possible:

Not liking/craving/demanding Spyderco is a serious, life-affecting problem, but it is treatable. There are clinics open in Golden, Colorado; Seki City, Japan; and Taipei, Taiwan. Save your sister while there is still hope!

Online counselling is available from 1SKS, New Graham, Knife Outlet, TDE, Knifeworks, and several other accredited counsellors.

:p

Thor,
I totally agree with the 'if it's not broke don't fix it' crowd above. I got my wife a mini-griptillian about a month ago (purple) and it is her favorite knife. She also likes the Spyderco Pro-Grip lightweight (hole and all). But I don't think you can go wrong with the Griptillian...
Cheers,
Steve

The Heat's steel is AUS-8.

That said, I think the Griptilian is an excellent choice for carry. More comfortable in the hand than the EDC.

No Spydercos! How could somebody not want the greatest knives in that price point!! ;)

I would stick with the griptillian if that's what she likes. Thats the only other non-spydie I like in that price point.

I fifth the Grip!!
Anything you get won't satisfy now that she already likes the Grip :)

If she sees anything other than the Mini-Grip, it will only serve to confuse her, so don't confuse her; Just go-ahead and buy your sis a yellow or purple 556 Mini-Griptilian...She WILL be very pleased with your gift.:).

FWIW, I agree with the Mini-Grip. Just got one myself (blue, 'cause I don't like purple, yellow or green) and it's smooooth opening, like melted butter. It even fits well in the downsized girlie pockets of my jeans and shorts. It's so light I don't even feel the weight of it there. She could carry one easily in a pocket or handbag and it wouldn't add to the weight. It's definitely the easiest opening knife I have now. I'm cosidering getting one for my sister (her b-day's coming up in a few weeks *and* she's a southpaw) to replace the cheap liner lock she's been carrying.

Moondrop...I'm also a "southpaw", and I find the Mini-Grip (as with pretty much all the Benchmade Axis-lock folders) to be perfect for us "lefties", and I'm SURE that YOUR sister would also be very pleased with a Mini-Grip.:).

BTW...It's GREAT to see another lady posting here at BladeForums!...We need more of you!.:).

I thought this would happen.... I agree, the knife is likely to be a Griptillian. Lets see, 12 replies, and only 2 suggestions. :)

Make that 13 replies and only 2 suggestions. Since it can't be a Spydie then you avoid the whole Spydie vs. BM debate. That being the case, the Mini Grip is the clear winner in its price range. The size and colored handles make it sheeple friendly, if that could be an issue.

Just got a yellow 556 for Father's Day. I have smart kids. ;)

I love the 556!

But maybe a Kershaw/Ken Onion Rainbow Leek?
The flipper is simply awesome and she will never break a fingernail opening the blade.

Or the Spyderco Salsa--I know she prefers studs to holes, but the Salsa has the "cobra hood".

Good luck,
Allen.

The only problem with the Leek is you have to make sure you don't open it in front of anyone in authority who might decide it's a switchblade. :)

glockman99,

I've been wondering where the rest have been lately. I haven't seen any of the few regulars I used to see. Maybe I'm reading the wrong threads. :)
