Grittiness in my GEC

I have a slip joint by GEC that has just recently become very gritty when trying to open and close the main blade. The secondary blades are excellent and it has not been a problem there. I have looked inside the frame and it doesn't look dirty. Should I just oil it or is there a specific thing I could do that would solve this problem?
 
I fix that by putting dawn dish soap in the pivot and working it open and closed under hot water. Dry it all off and oil the joints.
 
Same. Rinse off in hot soapy water, I also use Dawn, swish it around in the hot water with the blade open, half open, in between. Work the blade from open to half open over and over. Wrap the blade in tape to prevent cutting yourself if needed. Flush and rinse with hot water, dry with paper towels, blow into the blade wells and pivot real well, use canned air, then follow up with WD-40 (water displacer) and then your favorite oil.

I haven't had the need to do the whole soapy water thing yet I've always had good results by just spraying the joint real good with WD40 or Breakfree CLP then working the joint open and closed a bunch. I just keep repeating the process until the knife functions like it should again then wipe it all down and put one little drop of gun oil in the joint and call it good.
 
I recommend being very careful as you are opening and closing the knife. Flushing the joints works great for the knife, but if your hand slips off the wet, soapy blade, even dull knives hurt.

Don't ask how I know this. Trust me, it is true.
 
One small addition to the soapy-water-bath: get a brush with long enough bristles to reach down into the bottom of the blade well. The brush doesn't have to be small, but the bristles must be long and relatively stiff. I use a brush meant for cleaning off plates in dishwashing.
