Before I commit my hard earned dollars to a real knife grinder I want to give my Grizzley one more chance. If I can improve the tracking, I will keep her for now, otherwise I need to buy the KMG. I have made over a hundred knives with the Griz but it's not easy and there is always lots of time consuming file work. I have researched modifications to improve things such as replacing the tension spring with a stronger one, installing a new platen, and finally putting a crown on the drive wheel. Well the first two are underway but I want to make sure putting a crown on my 10" rubber wheel will actually help. I'm a flat grinder so it doesn't bother me to do this, I use the platen. But I just am less than confident this will work. So if any of you have done this, or any of you who know the answer, will crowning my 10" rubber drive wheel improve tracking?

I'm so ready to drop kick my grinder. I'm very fragile right now, please don't tell me to get the KMG.

.

You can do it with electrical tape, and see if it works for you without altering the wheel

I built a platen that stuck out a couple more inches with rollers at the top and bottom and that solved the majority of my tracking problems. Still gets a little wobbly from time to time, but it'll do until I get to wanting to make knives to sell. Then I'll have to drop the coin for a "real" grinder.

I need to do some more tweaking on it and I think I may be able to solve the last of my issues. Also purchased a glass platen to try. Just need a few hours of uninterrupted time in the shop.

I bought one of the early Grizz grinders in '99 or 2000.
Worked with it for about 2 months and bought a Bader BIII variable.
After that, I always called my Grizz a $500.00 pencil sharpener.
The only use I've had for it since was to use the control arm on my surface grinder belt-conversion.

I am a bit embarrassed to say that I have used the same grizzly from the beginning(with very few mods) and never had a problem with it. I have never burnt a blade, had severe tracking issues or felt the NEED for another grinder(and I HAVE worked on a few of the more popular variable speed models.)

That said, those TW grinders are very tempting.
