Any good?? What size bore diameter? Any other comments??

Taz,

The bore diameter is 3/4". I have heard if you tell them that you will return any imbalanced, out of round wheels that they usually send a good one. I have not purchased one because the 8" wheel is too fast for anything but hogging for me. Since the Grizzly is an integral unit, I have decided to design and build a grinder to meet all of my needs. For $60, I think the price is hard to beat, even if the wheel is not perfect.

thanks for the heads up. I think i will use a 1 hp, 3400 RPM motor stepped down to about 1700 rpm with pulleys and the shaft I have is 5/8". Can i get an adapter for it?? I am also trying to build a grinder...i have motors, pulleys, and rollers with tensioners and stuff, so i basically need the contact wheel.

Taz,

Yes you can get adaptors. Check with your favorite industrial supply house that sells grindings wheels. You can buy a grinding wheel adaptor kit for for $1-$2. It is basically a set of (4-6)plastic bushings that that range from about 1/2" dia to 1" dia with a std wall thickness such they they nest inside each other. This way you can mix and match the bushings to fit a variety of shaft/bore combinations.

If you need more info about this, drop me a line and I'll help you out.

Sincerely,

Be cafeful about bushings. I purchased a contact wheel for a 5/8" shaft and was sent one that fit a 3/4" shaft that they had installed a brozne bushing. Didn't run straight, Sent if back to the factory and got the right one. The guy at the factory said not to use bushings at all.

Thanks, guys. I was going to chop the speed in half for all grinding and then even more for finishing, like 900 rpm or so...Rfink, aren't you making contact wheels now?? how much would a 10" by 2" rubber faced contact wheel with 5/8" more be?? or should i spend the money and get a $150 contact wheel???

Taz,

Yes and no. I made a few 3" rubberized wheels. Nathan House is kind enough to test 'em out for me. I'm trying to learn about rubber compounds, hardness and durability for good knife grinding wheels. So I'm basically a newbie in rubber but can handle your other machine shop requirements. Based on the feedback from Nathan, I'll go ahead and start some 8" wheels then 10" wheels. Don't hold your breath though as it may take a few months and you guys are taking up all my spare time with orders for idlers and driver wheels. (thank you!) :-)

Sincerely,
