hey guys theres only a $40 buck difference between the craftsman 2x42 and the grizzly 1x42. could you guys tell me which you think is better and why? im looking to upgrade from my 1x30.

What are you going to use the machine for?

I, have both machines and each is modified for "sharpening".

One thing that's pretty much certain is that the Craftsman will cut a hell of a lot faster. With it's notoriously fast belt speed, I can guarantee the Craftsman 2x42 (which I have) will have at least twice the SFPM, probably quite a bit more, depending on the speed of the Grizzly. This also means fast heat build up, and it can catch pretty bad on higher grits. With practice though, it's quite a capable machine.

The 2x42 is s minimum for actually making mediumsize knives. Keep theit 1x30 for sharpening. Dust the motor housing and flip it ion its back mountedto to a board. The 3/4 horse craftsman/jet right? F

Is it me or has there suddenly been a whole load of 2x42 threads this week?

Go with the Craftsman 2x42. Take a look at the threads on making mods to it.

The Grizzly would probably be better suited for a dedicated sharpening machine. IMO the Craftsman is much easier to modify for knife grinding. The only major drawback is the speed. It runs way too fast. But if you can get proficient on the Craftsman 2x42, it will be that much easier for you when you get a better/slower grinder.

One more thing, see if you can find an older used model with the 2/3hp motor. The newer ones are only 1/3hp, and the quality on some of the new models have been a little spotty.
