grizzly 2x72

A friend of mine has a grizzly 2x72 and the belt keeps moving side to side when grinding. Also,on the top alum. wheel the belt is centered using the tracking knob but, the 8" wheel on the bottom the belt is not centered. The belt is offset from one wheel to another even when trying to adjust the tracking. Could the top alum. wheel needs to be loosen to either move it left or to the right just a hair so, it is aligned with the bottom 8" wheel? Does the whole top tracking mechanism need to be worked on and adjusted? Also, how tight is the belt supposed to be? I would appreciate your help on the ???'s. Rey in Texas
 
Rey, try running a line of eletrical tape around the center of the idler wheel. That should help with tracking.

I don't have a Grizzly, so I don't know specifically how it should line up, but others have said they needed to disassemble and reassemble correctly some parts that they found to be reversed.

I would try to see if you can reverse something, put a washer on the opposite side or whatever, I would expect that the 2 wheels should be in the same line.

This means to me that the belt tension needs to be higher.

When you get sufficient tension that should stop.
 
I'd put a little more wraps of tape, maybe 2/3. Move the top wheel in or out till you get both wheels and platen lined up and put a little more pressure on the belt. A brace to the upper part also helps stiffen it up a little. It will take a bit of fiddling, but you should be able to improve the movement and tracking.
 
remember to have your long shaft leading to the top pully straight when tightened down,and the top wheel straight it will throw it off alot,Aswell do the tape trick
 
First step use a straight edge to line up the and squair the top and bottom wheels.
You may have to loosen the upper shaft bracket and turn the bracket.
Once the wheels are squair and lined up then add a wrap of tape to the top wheel.
(self sticking scilicone tape that is called rescue tape works very whell for this and will out last electrical tape by many years.)
Make sure to put a filter over the air vents on the grinder motor.
 
There should be no need for tape on the top wheel.
There are lots of adjustments on the Grizzly idler wheel.

There are adjustment screws on the idler wheel assembly that allow you to center it to the drive wheel. It is a matter of a couple set screws. I have had a grizzly for almost 4 yrs and had to realign it when I switched out drive wheels.... easy breezy.

I have an older manual for my Grizzly. I found some instructions for putting a slight bevel on the drive wheel. I did this to mine and it improved the tracking.

I'm not sure why they didn't have this in the updated manual. It may be a liability issue because of the technique they use in the manual. I will say it probably is not the most safe thing to do. In a nutshell, you basically file down the edges of the drive wheel with a file while it is running and give it a slight crown. I must say I cringed when I saw it in the manual. Assuming I calculated it correctly, I was using a coarse file on a rubber surface moving at 3666 FPM (~61Fps). PM me and I can scan the page from my manual and send it to you.

Once you have the two wheels alligned, apply all the tension that you can to the belt. The spring on the idler wheel isn't sufficient by itself to supply enough tension to get good tracking. This should fix the problem.
