It's time for me to get a real anvil instead of making do with a piece of steel bolted to
a chunk of wood. Since I live near Grizzly's
HQ I've been looking at their anvils.

Does anyone have opinions about them they'd
care to share?

Thanks!

Never used their anvils, but I have their belt sander for knifemaking, the G1015 i believe. it is ok. Not the best, but it gets the job done after several modifications, and problems with QC, etc. And i had to wait 2 months because the item was on backorder, so I had to keep my credit card empty because I never knew when the grinder would hit.

Grizzly makes a decent product, especially for the price, but be prepared for having trouble with it. An anvil is a simple piece of equipment, but there can still be problems with it. Maybe someone else can talk about the anvils specifically, but with dealing with Grizzly, they can be a PITA.

The problem I'm faced with is that while their anvils have that nice anvilly look to them I have no idea if they have hardened working surfaces or not. I'm not smart enough to know what to look for, and the clerks I talk to know less than I do. I don't suppose bashing one with a hammer would be a good idea.

tell you what..sneek a ball bearing in your pocket..lol and bounce the ball from a foot or so..if it bounces 3/4 to,or all the way back to your hand I would think it should be allright..but then what do i know..seriously...it`s a good test for those old ones like my "Peter Write"..have fun!!..join the heat and beat crowd your sure to have a lot of fun!!

i keep grinding and grinding and it is still too short!!

Their anvils are cast iron, no hardened faces and will not hold up to heavy beating. I called their customer service rep about these some time back.

Do yourself a favor and contact Centaur Forge. They are the premier blacksmith supply house and have really nice anvils. They are definitely expensive but worth it and you will get the real deal. Peddinghaus are very good, top of the line. If you can find an old Peter Wright or Hay Budn from a used source, they are also excellent. I have a no name anvil that I bought from a blacksmith in the hills of CT from a classified ad. It is in great shape and I paid $1.50/lb for a 100 lb anvil. The new ones will run you quite a bit more.
