I have been looking at anvils and came across The Grizzlys on Amazon. They have a 100lb. for $129 and a 300lb for $369.00. I am wanting it for blacksmithy and eventualy knife forging. I have a ranch and it will probably be used more for repair and genral farm type use. Anybody have any experience with the Grizzly and would you suggest the 100 or 300lb? Thanks in advance for your comments.

At that price, they're most likely cast iron, and too soft. If you can examine one before
you buy, drop a ball bearing on the face from 10-12" and see how much rebound you
get. A good cast steel anvil, or a wrought iron anvil with a steel face will rebound
90% or better....cast iron much less.
Because cast iron anvils are softer, they absorb more of your work energy, and thus,
make you work harder to accomplish any task.
If they're cast iron, I'd suggest looking for a good used one.

You are right Russ, they are cast iron. I'm into easier, so I think I will try to find a used cast steel. I know new they are pricey. Thanks for the input. If you have any suggestions on a site that I might look for a used anvi, I would appreciate it.

Terry. As a price reference, you could check an online auction site, but
to actually buy, I'd suggest local farm/estate sales, or word-of-mouth
networking...

Grizzly anvils are soft faced anvil shaped objects, but it looks like you are now headed in the right direction.

If you search craigslist within 300 miles of your location, an anvil will likely turn up although it may take a while of checking back.

Another possible way of finding a good used anvil is to contact the local auctioneers and let them know what you are looking for. They are usually more than happy to get additional buyers at their auctions and will let you know when they have something that you are interested in.

As far as the size goes, I would recommend 140# & up. The larger the anvil, the less effort it takes to move the steel. Two brands that are usually top quality (if their condition is still good) are Peter Wright & Hay Budden.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll do some research this weekend and see what I can stir up. Let you know what I find.
