Grizzly fighter steel

I am new to this forum and appreciate all of the experience available here. I have made a few knives and most were from blade blanks. I have been looking at another, the Grizzly Fighter Blade 11 (Link: http://www.knifeandgun.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=KG248 ), but the steel used concerns me. The steel is advertised as "High carbon content modified 420 stainless"

I am on a Law Enforcement Tactical Unit and intend to use the knife. I don't want to buy something that will let me down when I need it most. I would like to build the knife myself for that personal touch, but don't have the equipment to shape the blade from bar stock so a blank is my best option right now. I also don't have $300 + to spend at the moment on a high quality custom.

I have also considered the Delta 5 kit, which is AUS8, although I would like a 6 or 7 inch blade.

Any thoughts on this blank or any suggestions on other similar designs would be welcome.

I have no comments one way or another about the steel or kit. You're on a tactical team and are making a knife up in case you have to transition from rifle, pistol to "oh dear God, where's my knife?" and you're cutting corners on the knife? I'd buy a decent commercial knife.

Edited and reedited:

There are some makers that offer discounts to military and law enforcement with proof.

By no means do I want to cut corners. I'm looking for good steel with a design to meet my needs and taste. Idealy I would like to make my own as a matter of personalization and could benefit from the lower cost of purchasing a blank and finishing it myself. For this blank I was simply concerned about the steel used. I want to get the most bang for my buck, as I alluded to earlier, on my salary I can't afford to pay the premium for a quality custom.

I would skip the 420 stainless, though it can be an adequate steel it's still lower end. Check out texasknife.com or knifekits.com for some more options for kit knives, both seem to have more options and/or better steels. You could also check out the maker's for sale section here-there are occasionally blades ready made that you could add scales to (look through the parts/equiptment section). Also, you could find a maker that puts out a style of blade that you like and ask if he'll make one that you could put the handles on yourself, though that may not save you much money. Lastly, you could find a proven performer (such as a Cold Steel SRK or Recon Tanto in Carbon V) and remove the rubber handles and rehandle it yourself. Good luck:thumbup:

I have a Buck Nighthawk that I thought about removing the handle from, but I wasn't sure what I'd find under the original. I may still try it. Thanks

I believe that the member greatlakeswaterjet sells blanks...You might look at his site. The steel he uses is a whole lot better than the 420 IMHO...
