I was considering buying the Grizzly H6070 1" X 30" Belt/5" Disc Sander instead of the one from Harbor Freight or the Sears 2 x 42 to start my knife making. Can anyone give me any opinions or advice on this?

I don't know anything about that Grizzly. I started with the harbor freight, gave it to a friend because 1x30 just wasn't enough machine. I bought a Delta 1x42 thats a great machine, a little fast, but the issue now is that I wish I had 2" wide belts. If I were to do it all over, I'd spend the money on the Craftsman 2x42.

I started out on a 1 x 30 and used it hard for many years before moving up to a 2 x 72. Hardly the perfect machine, but it will teach you to grind and it will make a fine blade with a bit of patience and a lot of belts. You may be surprised at how much it can do.

This is a 1 x 30 blade:

All the best,

If you end up ordering the Craftsman online, google up a promotional code. There is always at least a 10% one floating around. I got mine for ~$130 before tax and shipping.

I started out with the HF 1 X 30 and later on built a 2 x 72. I still use the 1 X 30 a lot and will buy another one when this one dies. It is great for detail work and sharpening
