Hey all,

Ok. I confess. I bought the Grizzly mini lathe at the tent sale yesterday and don't even know the first thing about how to work it.

Anyone out there that has one that could give me some tips? Or maybe direct me to a sight online with tips for lathe work? BASIC lathe work....

I figured at the price I got the lathe for it was time to learn to use one.

Thanks!

Hi Craig,

Probably the easiest way is to go to a used book store and find an old machine shop text book. They are filled with tons of info for the beginner. Also you Centaur forge has a lot of books and reprints of info from the past. I always pick up the old text books when I find them usually for a buck or less.

It's kinda like hangin, you never get used to it.

Hey there Craig, dont know of any sites off the top of my head, but some basic stuff:
RPM = cutting speed of workpiece X 4 divided by diameter of work
(cutting speed is determined by the workpiece material, can get the number from machinery's handbook or a textbook) mild steel for example is 80-100 surface feet per minute. Also for drilling holes, the same formula would apply, but you'd use the diameter of the drill instead of the workpiece diameter. But IMO probably before you start trying to cut anything you should put the machine into low RPM and 'cut air' well away from the chuck just to get a feel for what all of the controls do. Also I've probably got a couple old machining textbooks around here, drop me a mail if you want and I'll send them your way.

Jonsey, I had thought of checking out a second hand book store. But out here in the sticks where I live, the closest one is 80 miles away! I may check out the library for books.

Sumo, you have mail!

Thanks guys!

Drop me a e-mail and I will send it your way.
Let me know what you have coming so I don't send the same books as Sumo.
