Grizzly motor for grinder?

I have two 3-phase motors from Grizzly that I got from their specials page. One is a 2hp TEFC and one is just a 3/4hp sealed motor without the fan. I guess they were phasing out carrying 3-phase motors as they don't list them anymore. I've been pleased with them. The TEFC runs my KMG and is a great size for the grinder, and the smaller TE motor runs my disc grinder.

For whatever reason, the price seems a bit steep (probably because I got such a steal on the motors I bought), but if it's comparable to what you've seen out there, I wouldn't have any worries about the motors themselves.

FYI, 1.5 hp is about tops if you're planning on running them on 110V, so I'd definitely recommend wiring up 220 if you choose a 2hp motor just to protect yourself from overloading the wiring system.

If you're not in a rush, have a look on Craigs List, Ebay, Kijiji, garage sales - look for local motors.

You can often find great motors for $ 50-80 ish

Shipping is the killer.

There are lots of motors I would have bought, but shipping doubled or tripled the price.

Thanks a lot! I'm now going a completely different (and better) direction. I didn't realize that you could use a 3ph motor on single ph input with a VFD until I watched Coe's video. By the time I buy a single ph motor, step pulleys, belt, shaft and bearings I'd have as much money as a VFD. Magically, a 3ph motor made itself available TODAY.

You'll be very happy with the variable speed setup. Just make sure of one thing: if the VFD you choose isn't wash down/dust rated (NEMA 4 enclosure), you'll need to put it in a clean box to keep metal dust out of the cooling ports. The other option is to remotely mount it in a clean location and run the control leads to where you need them, but those clean places are few and far between in most knife shops. Metal dust and VFD's will = a big, loud POP at some point, and you'll be looking for a new VFD.

I have a TECO FM50 rated for 2hp, and here's the box I put together for it based on another forum member's pictures:

The site that AVigil supplied above offers a nema 4 VFD for $448. Does that sound reasonable to you?

Sounds about average. I've seen 'em listed as high as $500+. You can find the same VFD for a bit cheaper if you look around, but shipping will add to the cost.
