Well, I finally got a chance to use the grizzly. Overall, not too shabby! Tracking can be a little better, belt tends to slide with a lot of pressure, but that could be the tension, which I am still playing with. the contact wheel needed to be flattened out, the edges were higher than the middle. Also, when gringing with the contact wheel, my hand hits the motor housing. Motor runs pretty quiet, but the metal makes lots of noise on the platen. I will make a new platen over christmas break, as this one is kinda soft w/o the graphite pad on it. oh yeah, this thing is heavy!!! I used the tool rest a little, but not much as I was mostly free hand flat grinding today on the platen. Grind lines aren't that bad to my suprise! the main trouble I had was controlling the blade because I am used to a 1x30 and I was flat grinding horizontally on the grizz instead of vertically on the 1x30. I didn't really use the wheel much except for hogging and starting the grinds as a lead in. On another note, I did a booboo. I broke my scribe!

dont ask how! Even without it, I think the edge is kinda in the middle of the blade. I am working on a tanto, chisel point, flat ground with a back edge for a friend. So far, it is pretty impressive considering it is my first with the grizz and first with 2 edges on it!

3M regalloys rule! I have 40 and 80 grit and man, do they cut fast! I tried the 120 and 220 regalites...they work nice, but be careful not to burn the steel or your fingers. I burned my fingers 3 times using those things! Well, off to turkey day at the relatives. Ill post more tonight and I will be on MIrc later if you want to know more bout the grizz!

Taz,
Thats he big problem I have encountered with the Grizzly: Can't really grind in one direction using the contact wheel because the motor gets in the way. If you are using the flat platen then you don't have that problem.

Have you put electrical tape in the center of the guide wheel? Build up about a 1/8" strip in the center of the guide wheel and that should help with the tracking. Keeps the belt "center".
Happy Thanksgiving and have fun!

Taz, have you seen Allen Blade's video on the Grizzly. He shows you how to make a simple brace for the grinder which will help reduce vibration. A small piece of angle iron and two hose clamps will do the trick.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

I recently got my Grizzly grinder going also. I'm very impressed with it! Much more so then my first grinding attemps. It's a good thing a bought a bunch of crap steel from a local home improvement place. I'll have a few metal toothpics to give away as presents this Christmas!!! The pile of metal dust on the floor might make a homemade etch-o-sketch or something!

My grizzly is very quiet. Everything assembled together well. I did take a file to the contact wheel edges. I didn't try it before doing that, it just seemd to be the thing to do. I ordered an extra platen with mine so I could make a new one while I used the original.
