A few years ago I picked up a Grohmann/Russel #1 belt knife. I was hooked in by it's dimensions, unusual shape, and owner testimonials. I really want to like it for camping, etc., but it doesn't get used much. The main problems are that the sheath does not hold the knife securely, and I cannot get a decent edge on it to save my life. It is a stainless blade and was frighteningly dull out of the box.

I have the #1 Grohmann. I love the shape and the way it fits the hand. It handles well for gutting and skinning. I don't remember it being dull when new but I reshaped the edge anyway. I've had no trouble getting it sharp and it stays sharp. I agree about the sheath. I keep checking to see if it's still there. It hangs too loose and flops around. I keep thinking the flimsy belt attachment will break. When I get some time I'll put together a new one that inspires more confidence. I am happy with the knife itself but I hate it when I buy an item and have to put time in it to bring it correct (Referring to the sheath).

I grew up in Northern Ontario and the Grohmann #1 (Carbon) was a popular knife. My buddy's father who's shot and dressed a million moose swears by his #1 and wouldn't want anything else.

Many years back I received a stainless Grohmann Jump Master Knife with stag handles and I love that little thing. It is the same size as the model 1 but shaped differently with an overlap sheath that secures the knife better than any other sheath I own. I've always been happy with the steel keeping an edge and I do use the knife a lot and has been in a half dozen of deer or so.. It's a great little knife and the size is very convenient. I am a big carbon steel fan and would rather had my little grohman in carbon but the stainless is doing the job just fine.

I've also just acquired a brand new high carbon model 4 survival knife with water buffalo horn handles and I've upgraded to get an overlap sheath.. Haven't used or sharpened the knife but I know I will love it.

Both of my Grohmann's certainly feel like they were designed for camp, dressing and skinning work.

Hope this helps

Cheers.

I should also mention that I own a set of Grohmann kitchen knives.. I've had them for 4 years and use them almost every day and apart form a little steel work, I've only had to sharpen the paring knife.. They are silly sharp and the chef knife has split it's fair share of hard squash..

Both the Grohmann #1 and Survival Knife are on my wish list. I never knew there was an issue with the sheath, but if I have to, I'll make a sheath for them.

One of my favorite designs. I have these two and will pick up the Survival knife soon.
