I really like the design of this knife. It is the right size with a handle about 4.5 inches, 4 inch blade, blade shape and so on, for what I want. However, I hear conflicting reports on its ability to take and to keep an edge. It seems the carbon is better but is still less than stellar according to many. Some are very happy with these same qualities. It has been mentioned heat treatment is spotty and may be the cause.

Does anyone have any definitive information on the what, how's and why's of this problem? Should I take my chances and get a carbon blade one?

Hey Flashman...

I have an entire set of Grohmann knives R1 through R4 and the R3000 folder and have used the R1 on several deer, the others I have carried and used for several camp chores...

Haven't noticed and problems with dullness, and actually the R1 I have used held up very well without having to resharpen...

I understand that the carbon models may be somewhat better, however can't comment on them as I have only stainless.

These are some of my favorite knives and wouldn't have a problem buying another, or giving one to a friend as a gift...

Don't think you can go wrong with any of their models, regardless of the steel...

I gotta agree with Eric on this one. They are great knives. Not perfect, but pretty darn good in my books. The big one (Survival model) is my favorite knife for splitting small logs. Just feels good in my hands.
I don't find them to hold the edge better than my customs, but they do pretty well. Not that hard to sharpen either.
I do prefer the carbon steel option, by the way.

hope this helps.

hey there im from the same area and ive toured the factory in pictou county and can honestly say carbon is the better choice because this paticular carbon is pretty corrosion resistant i own several of these fine knives and my family swears by them youve made a good choice with these you can also get different handle materials like bone rosewood and so on good luck

I have been wanting one of their knives for a while but can't make up my mind if I want the flat grind and if I want the build it yourself kit. Every time i have come acros obne and had the opertunity to use it I have found it to be a good quality knife with plenty of utility to it although I must say I am fonder of the smaller baldes.

I've had one for years, a sentimental favorite, in carbon steel. I think it's probably something like 1084, tough, good edge holding but not stellar (like 52100 or 50100B/Carbon V). Great versatile design, it'll do all your cutting chores.
