I've got a #3 Grohmann knife with rosewood handle and hollow ground SS blade at home.
It sees only kitchen usage and it's perfect for just about all tasks.
The handle is one of the most comfy I've ever held, the blade has good heft, strong point, and slices relatively well.
But now I see that they offer different options on their knives.
I was thinking of the same #3 with a flat grind High Carbon blade and Micarta handle.
This might make an excellent EDC with a horiz kydex belt sheath.
And the price is great, less than half of the Dozier I want?
So, does anybody own a flat grind or High C bladed Grohman?
What steel do they use?
The SS blades sharpen up nicely, but don't get that scary sharp edge that most of my High C blades get.
Any other comments on their flat grind High C blades are welcome.
Thanks,
Lenny

Hey Lenny...

I have several Grohmanns, all Stainless...

R1, R3, R4, and the R3000 folder...

Probably the most under rated, overlooked knife around...

The Grohmanns are great handling knives,,very comfortable to work with and I'd have to disagree with you on the sharpness issue.. I find I can get them extremely sharp, however I must admit that I don't have a carbon blade and have nothing to compare it to..

I believe I have one flat ground blade, although it is the kit knife, which is still unfinished.

As far as kydex sheaths go, I believe I'm the only one making synthetic sheaths for Grohmanns, and you can find them here.

Grohmann’s catalog mentions C70 carbon steel (0.7% carbon) and 4110 stainless (.50-.60 C, 13-15% Cr, 0.50-0.60% Mo) at 56-8 HRC.

I talked to the Grohman rep at the NRA show. He indicated that you'd get higher performance, but rust out of the carbon steel blades. The stainless is good, just doesn't hold an edge as long as the carbon steel. The knife design is old, but it won numerous awards in the 1950-60s. It' was also copied by German, American and Japanese makers and sold as knock offs.

I called up Knives Direct yesterday and ordered a #3 with Carbon steel blade, flat ground, and dark green Micarta Handle.
Should be here before the end of the year.
Normark, I sent you an email with a few questions. I need a sheath for it.
