Grohmann knives?

I'm looking for a new fixed blade for camping and fishing and one of the ones that caught my eye was the survival knife #4 by grohmann knives. I would want it in carbon steel and flat ground which I believe is one of the options I can get. From experience, how does this knife hold up in the woods?

They hold up very well in the woods. Good enough, that the Canadian Air Force uses them as the survival knife for their pilots.

I have used 4 different Grohman knives in the woods and all were great knives. My favorite was the carbon steel #1 for general outdoor woods use. The survival knife was to big and cumbersome for me. However they are all great knives for outdoor use.

I looked at them, but thought them a little expensive. Good thread. I'm prepared to learn I'm wrong, and get some spending done.....

Hey Guys...

The R4 is a pretty meaty knife...
I really like mine....

I've got 5-6 in total..

As for carbon vs. Stainless...

I've got nothing bad to say about their stainless blades at all..
They produce a great edge and hold it pretty good...

Can't go wrong with a Grohmann..

Jeez that was fast :) . I don't plan on using the knife to hack down trees or anything but mostly just cut open packages, clean fish, and the like so this sounds like a good one. Thanks!

I have an original grohmann Canadian militray issue blade circa 1960's and its the worst blade for edge holding. I hear the new ones are better.

I have to disagree I find they hold a edge quite well. Maybe compared to some super steels they are lacking, but for everyday use and ease of sharpening they are great. i was issued one in 1994 and wore it every day for 4 years in the military. I added serrations to mine for cutting rope but besides that I was completely satisfied. I currently also own a #4 and it is also great. I am surprised more people dont own them. The design is ingenious for cutting and comfort. also you will never lose this knife with it sheath. The only complaint is when drawing the #4 from it sheath you have to be careful not to cut the cover for it.
Although I own many more expensive knives I feel that my grohams are some of my bests.

Cheers from the North

I agree with Mormark in that the #4 is a beefy knife. I like it. It is my heavy duty knife, the biggest I'd carry, excluding a machete.

I have the stainless/saber, but it was $50 like/new on EBAY. I am know looking for the trout and bird knife.

One comment. Sheath is too small and poorly designed. I keep meaning to make a pouch sheath for it.

Also, where are you looking to buy the carbon blades?

Thanks,
tjg

That's a great deal from bladematrix. Has anyone dealt with them?

I've dealt with bladematrix a few times. All good. For what its worth, thats where I get my OH knives to make the Nessmuks with.

GREAT link btw.

i have a #4 they are sweet knives very beefy. i had to reprofile the edge geometry before i really liked it ( it was a little thick for me ) but a very durable knife works well from chopping in the kitchen to batoning for fire wood. i second the woes of the sheath thinking about getting normark to make me a sheath for it. hey normark would you post a pic of your #4 in your sheath ?
