Does anybody know what steel Grohmann used in their knives? I'm really interested in a #2 (Bird & Trout Knife), but I have no idea what steel is used except that it's "high carbon stainless".

Here's what Grohman says about their blade steel....

"Grohmann takes pride in their products and that means using high quality materials. Grohmann's most popular steel in the outdoor fixed blade knives are fashioned from european high carbon stainless steels, such as 4110, which is somewhat comparable to the USA 440 series. This steel has stood the test of time due to its ease of sharpening and edge holding ability."

Uhh....That only limits the options a little bit. The properties of 440C are quite different from those of 440A.

Thanks, Keith. That would make sense. If one goes to the trouble of using a 440C-type alloy, one is usually not obscure as to the grade.
