I have a cousin who is getting married in August. He wants to buy all his groomsmen gifts/knives and use me as the provider. He wants a nice knife with their initials engraved in it. He has a nice budget to work with $100+ per person. Being married for some time I am encouraging him to forgo the engraving and the niceties and get them something they will use and love forever.

A little background here. He lives in a rural area on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. You either Hunt, Fish or Both. So I am looking for you married guys to give me some feedback. Looking back now, would you rather have given your buds a pocket knife like a nice Kershaw Scallion with initials engraved, or a higher end knife like a ZT, or a good quality fixed blade?

Any and all feedback would be welcome. I am going to copy this thread and email the link to him in a few days, so I would love to hear what you guys have to say?

Hard to top that 110 setup. I gave out flasks to my guys, was looking at the swiss army money clip knives. If its a lifetime tool or commemorative gift is the choice he gets to make.

I still see one of my groomsmen, he had makers mark46 in it, mmm good.

For guys that use and enjoy good outdoor tools, "higher end knife like a ZT, or a good quality fixed blade? " this.

a nice traditional folder in a muskrat, trapper, or single blade trapper pattern would be a good consideration....

I have never been married but I have been in a bunch of weddings. I have received all kinds of gifts to be a groomsman and I remember them all. I really appreciate the good ones.

LOL Like I said I have never been married so I had NO idea that there was such a HUGE business built around it.

Just a quick Google. I really like the idea of a sheath/holster. You can engrave a lot more with that much material.

Some guys are going all out. If you are on the fence between a few items ~ you can give them 2 or 3 in a "Groomsman Survival Pack" :D

I would suggest a traditional folder like a Great Eastern cutlery liner lock. Less tactical but quite useful.

I picked up several Kershaw Wild Turkeys in Damascus Steel and Pakkawood for my Groomsmen. I then had their names engraved on the steel portion of the handle. I considered the knife a "Gentlemans' Knife" because of it's classy look and size, and because most of my Groomsmen work in offices all day. If your cousins Groomsmen all fish, I think a fishing knife would be appropriate.

This. A nice ebony handled traditional. Not scary. Lots of usefulness, and much more suit and tie appropriate. Besides, they are just plain cool. Add a leather slip cover...

I'd spend the money on the knife. NOT the engraving. If you give somebody a great tool they will use forever it makes a bigger impression than giving them a turd with their initials on it. Trust me. I'd pick a nice folder or fixed blade in his budget and get a bunch of em.

In my experience (I grew up in rural Alabama where everyone either hunted or fished or both), those kinds of guys are rarely knifies. They like to hunt and fish and think a Gerber is high cotton. The guy who suggested a custom Buck 110 is probably spot on.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry on the engraving. If you gotta scratch a guys name into a quality tool for him to remember who and when he got it from, then you're wasting your money in the first place.

I love this kit - was it something hand done or is it a kit one could buy?

Custom shop buck 110 in s30v with the bolsters engraved with their initials.

+1 on this!
An American Legend, great for hunting, fishing and general knife related tasks.

S30V, choice of brass or nickel silver handle, initials on bolster, 5 wood choices, and either tan or black leather sheath for $98 :)
