Groomsmen's Gifts??

Alright, my wedding is in a couple of months, and I need groomsmen gifts. What better gift to give from a knife knut then, well, knives?

My budget is probably about $30 apiece. I'm looking for a utility (rather than defensive) folder, preferably one that can be comfortably carried in a pocket, and one that would not scare the sheeple. Does anyone have any recommendations? (What kind of question is that, of *course* you do!!) I've heard that the CRKT Mirage is $10 at 1SKS. What else fits the bill??

I made little pocket fixed blades for my groomsmen and gave ushers nice titanium money clips with fancy scales (armadillo, ivory, oosic, etc). The knives didn't take more than a lot of time and minimal materials to make, and the money clips I purchased at last year's Badger Knife Show for a great price ($10 each, maybe?). The gifts went over great! Anyway, if your guys don't already have them, Leatherman Micras make a great little gift. I don't know a man on earth that has one and doesn't get a lot of use out of it. If you want just a regular knife I would go with something like a nice Case pattern. I am a hardcore knife nut and I still love my two Case canoes. They are slim, light, pretty and since I dress up every day for work I carry one all the time. The best thing about it is that you can customize each gift by changing what scales you get on the knife. Go to Ebay and type is Case Canoe and you will have access to any type of scales you can imagine, and a lot of them can be purchased for under $30. I would appreciate a nice, classic pocketknife more than a semi-tactical folder personally. Your other option would be to buy something like a Mirage with the screws holding it together and having someone make custom scales for each one. That would be cool!

Hmmm, custom scales? That's an idea. Wonder if I can get custom scales for less than $20/knife (if I'm spending $10 per on Mirages) ....

So who does custom scales? :-)

If these are not hardcore knuts, and you want something with more sentimental value, I would go with something you can engrave.

The Buck executive series are small traditional lockbacks, all stainless handles, perfect for engraving.

Another option would be the small SAK with blade, file, scissors, tweezers. I think they make some of them with a small engraveable panel on the handle.

I remember reading a while back, some guy did the same thing you're thinking about, and gave out engraved Spydercards.

I'd have to agree with the Spydercards. When I got married 5yrs ago, I was a poor college student, and could only afford some cheap Frost Cutlery folders with little LED lights on them. I think my brother still has his somewhere. I think they all would have been much happier with the Spydercards.

Puma also makes some nice little folders. Their Mini 4-Star knives come in a number of configurations, and can be found on eBay for less than $30, usually. There is Cocobolo wood, stainless, stag, redbone, and brownbone, and even Pearl for the best man.(the pearl and the stainless together are about 60, so that evens out)

Good luck with all the wedding plans, and remember it all. Those memories are some of the fondest you can have.

I would recommend something from CASE in maybe a Barehead Trapper, Mini Trapper, Pen knife, Yello Sodbuster JR., or Copperlock. My brother gave us Case stockmans when he was married. As for me it was just "I Do" and "Lets Gamble"!!

Thanks,

I wouldn't plan on the Mirages at SMKW to last much longer at $10. They have the medium plain, the medium serrated, and the large plain. The medium plains might be a little cheaper to have scales made for, than the large.

A couple other CRKT suggestions: The larger LUS. The longer I have it, the more I like it. One of it's better aspects, it is gray, and not the eternal black; and the new Polkowski/Kasper fixed blade. I'm not real fond of the 2 sheaths you get, but think they may loosen up a bit. Bayou LaFourche has them at $29. Several on-line dealers will sell the large LUS under $30.

Good luck, and either congratulations or condolences, whichever is appropriate!

For not scaring the sheeple AND being darned useful, I would vote for the Victorinox Executive.

Others I would suggest looking at are the Victorinox Rambler and Classic, the Zytel Spyderco Dragonfly, and Leatherman Micra.

Any traditional folder, say with bone scales and carbon blades, should do the trick nicely.

I gave all the guys in my wedding Leatherman Micra's. As far as I know they are all still carrying them.

I've given them also to every male family member (and a couple of females) as a Christmas gift at one time or another and they all go over well.

I personally think it's an excellent small piece and carry mine always. Perfect for "pulling out" around whiners and their hard to beat as nail clippers.

Don't even know it's in your pocket and at roughly $18 each you can get them a flask to boot.

I don't think you could go wrong with a Victorinox,Buck,or Case.Victorinox has a wide assortment of nice folders,Bucks Prince would be appropriate, and anyone would get a kick out of the Case Baby Butterbean.Best of Luck!

You might want to look into the SAK Classic with the engravable plate on it. It may not be the strongest pocketknife, but is inexpnsive, engravable, and has the cool little sissors. If not, you can look into the CRKT Lightfoot. Good Luck
