Groomsmen's pocketknives

Hey folks,
I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to knives and I need some advice about choosing a knife for some friends. I’m getting married in the summer and want to give my groomsmen a gift that is practical, memorable and long-lasting. I think a knife, engraved with their initials would suit that well.

The guys are not the type who normally carry knife, they live in Canadian urban centers and don’t need a big knife. I want to get them a pocketknife that they can carry with them all the time but will never be an inconvenience due to size, but I want something that is usable for random cutting tasks (slicing fruit/opening packages/etc.). I don’t have a ton of experience with knives so I want something that isn’t too diminutive but not cumbersome either for someone not used to carrying a knife.

I’ve scoured what’s out there and it seems like getting a decent steel for the blade makes the most difference in terms of holding an edge and not needing to resharpen all the time. I think AUS8 is pretty good, a step above the standard and would require less sharpening and maybe extend the life of the blade. Let me know if I am right in this assumption.

I have narrowed my choices to those with simple metal scales or wood since I will be engraving them.

I don’t want to break the bank, so if you can keep suggestions to within the price range of these knives, that would be awesome.

Al Mar Osprey in stainless (AUS8A steel -

Browning Presentation (AUS8A steel -

SOG Twitch I (AUS8 steel -

Spyderco Dragonfly (VG10 steel -

Any constructive thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Philip-

Have you given any thought to a decent slipjoint? Very practical for a non-knife urbanite type and easy to just drop into a pocket and go.

If they aren't knife folk, think about a Swiss Army knife.
Very useful and no one will freak at the thought of carrying it every day.
Lots of models to choose from, as well.

I gave my groomsmen a Swiss Army Knife / Flashlight combo set plus a bottle of their favorite booze. There are not hard to find and reasonable in price. Everyone was very pleased with them.

Good suggestion.

Victorinox Soldier.
4 useful tools, really nice looking Alox handles,
pocket friendly thin, and inexpensive.
Nice gift.

I gave my groomsmen Buck Gents (Buck model 525) that I had engraved with their monograms. They all seemed to like them a lot.

It's a small stainless lockback with a good flat surface suitable for engraving. Buck has been making them for many years and, like the 110, they have it down at this point.

Not too expensive, but still classy IMO.

Here's a link to Buck's site with the specs:

Almost every online dealer out there sells them.

I think SAKs are a good idea too. I'd suggest the Alox (alumunum handled) Cadet--available for about $20. It has a small panel for engraving.

I gave all my groomsmen a Spyderco Dragonfly and also had their initials engraved. Very classy looking IMO, and especially so when engraved. Don't sell the VG-10 short, great steel and wicked sharp out of the box. Fit and finish also excellent. None of my groomsmen were knife guys but I think they all admired the little tool. Also, if I remember correctly, (it was five years ago) I believe I paid around $35 each after shopping around on the internet.

A great gift idea for your groomsmen! Can't go wrong with the suggestions already mentioned. Perhaps add the Benchmade Benchmite to the list? Just a thought...

Anyway, good luck and congrats!

A Kershaw Leek would fit the bill nicely too. Especially the black on black model. Good steel, nice flat scales that would look great w/the silver shining through from the engraving against the black!

The Buck 500 series knives make nice gifts. Stainless bolster can be engraved.

As others have said, a nice Victorinox Swiss army knife. If you get one with alox handles, they have engraving plates on the back. Alox Cadets are great inexpensive, well built pocket knives and if you search around, can be found in a variety of colors.

I'd have to agree with the SAK suggestions. You really cannot go wrong with a Victorinox Cadet in Alox. Even someone with 3 of them will appreciate another one :)

Add me to the list for SAK. Anyone can get use out of one, even non-knife folk.:thumbup:

SAK, Give them the Farmer, great knife, <$30, engraving area on back.
