I have read many posts asking how to detect a burr and the answer is always finger nails and finger tips. Try using that fine-grooved steel rod that comes with kitchen knife sets. Use a very lite stropping (edge trailing) stroke on each side of the blade at the same angle as the bevel and you will easily "feel" the burr catching on the steel. Finally a use for grooved steels. :D

not a bad idea but you may be effecting the edge by doing this. I like the finger nail method because you can feel the burr.

i always relied on my fingers to feel the burr if i couldnt see it. the fingernail method is a good way too. you can use a stickpin to see if it catches a burr if you dont have fingernails.

You can use a glossy magazine to do the same thing. Almost any type of paper will work but the glossy magazine will show a visable trail besides just being able to feel it.

I use a 10X magnifying loupe and light to SEE even the slightest burr. I do this after stropping to know if I should keep going or not.
