I am working on a dagger that will have a fuller groove and needed a groove cutting tool. So I built one out of 1/2" square mild steel. The bit is 1095 and interchangable. I turned the square bar to 3/8" round and peened a scotch broom wood handle between two steel caps. The guide bar tension knob was turned from 2011 aluminum.

The guide bar is adjustable from 1/8" out to 1 3/4".

It also takes 1/4" and 3/8" lathe chisels.

Thanks guys! It was simple to build with just scrap pieces and will give an old school look to some of my older style knives I like to forge.

I have been practicing making a Ka-Bar type fuller groove and it's working good. Slow light passes make very clean cuts.

Justin, the anvil works fine aside from the cock-eyed hardy hole. It's good solid cast steel with good rebound.

How do you chuck it up in your mill  I don't see an arbor or anything that would fit into a collet  I'm confused

Just kidding of course ;) :D Great looking tool finny  It looks like it cuts well . Were you able to cut the groove shown in the time it took to watch the video ? Thats a not so bad looking piece of wood for an old broom handle too :) Yeah, nice tool

very nice! one question, how do you change the distance from the guide?

You loosen the small tension bolt and the guide slides in or out and then you tighten it.

David, the groove was about half cut when the video was shot. It can dig deep but it chaters and does not make a clean cut. Lots of light even passes make a real clean groove. It's clean enough that it would not need sanding. The wood is scotch broom which is a very obnoxious plant that grows around here and spreads like mad. It's native to the British isles.

Any way i could get a closeup shot or two of the bit itself? I need to cut some thin fullers myself and am looking to make a similar tool.

Thanks and nice work!
