For the past few days,we've been amused by watching a groundhog play around in our backyard.
But when my wife found that her plants were getting chewed up,I knew it was time for action!
It was now getting serious!!!

So I went out back, heavily armed,to save the garden from this evil beast:

Well...that didn't work,so I thought I'd try to trap it.
Used the RC3 to make a functional figure 4 & set a heavy concrete landscape stone on top of it:

Then I was gently reminded that we have some curious cats & that my daughter prefers to have them fat...not flat.
So I tried the fig. 4 with a box on top instead of the stone:

Well...he got close, but just wouldn't go for the bait:

Does he look like he's laughing???:

This ain't over yet. He will be mine:mad::

AAhhhhhhh memories.

I had the same problem in jersey before I migrated to Texas.

I finally went to the auto parts store and picked up some half inch ball bearings and plugged two of them with my slingshot and dispatched the third with my .22 after repeated attempts with the slingshot failed.

Little bastards have quite the appetite for tomatoes, jalapeno peppers and squash.

Not so fond of stainless steel or lead.

May I suggest CB shorts or the even quieter Super Colibris for all your urban pest-sniping needs?

Works for me.

Are you gonna eat him if you catch 'em? Post it like the squirrel thread, skin & cook it, make shish-ka-rodent :barf::barf::barf:

You want me to come over and kill it? We'll take photos for BladeForums and let Julie see how groundhog tastes.

I too recommend CCI CB .22 sort or long to pop em. They are quieter than most pellet guns and lots more powerful.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
The fig. 4 worked,he got in there a couple times yesterday,but......
He just flipped the box over & left:(

I think I'll just keep trying out different traps & playing around with him ( or is HE playing around with ME???).

It's kinda fun actually.
He can be my Trap Test Dummy.

Maybe you could strap the block onto the top of the box so nothing gets squished but it can't flip the box. <shrug>

I'm in the process of trapping a family of them in my yard. I'm taking the expedient way out and using a Havahart trap because they are tearing the hell out of everything with their digging. One down and at least two to go. :p

Well good luck with that Grump.
Hope you get them all.

I went out to reset the trap this morning & found my bait covered with ANTS!!!
So even if I don't get the groundhog,I may have just made a fig.4 ant trap:).

Use a tomato or a pepper for bait; that's likely why it's there in the first place. I can come over and pop it in the head if you want...

:p

I've used a figure 4 setup with a cardboard box weighed down with a block to trap a gopher last summer. Just add a little weight and it'll work.

We've got several "whistle pigs" around the shop garden. I think you've inspired me to practice my trap building skills as well. :)
