Growing irritation with Multi Tool vendors.

I have been looking around at what other Multitools bring to the table, and there are some very interesting ones. I have one I just received from Southern Trapper.

Nothing really remarkable about the multitool, but it is reasonably well-made and has a spring-loaded opening for the needle-nose pliers. This is a feature that is both good and bad, depending on the situation. What is really irritating is that nowhere on the tool are there any markings as to where it was made. We all know it was probably made in China. If you look on Amazon, the same multitool is sold under half a dozen different brands. I am not totally adverse to Chinese origins; I just want to be able to make an informed choice.

This tool does not have the fit or finish of the Leatherman.

I mean... if it doesn't say "Made in the USA," we can very reasonably assume it's made in China. I'm not sure what there is to be surprised about. Anything made in China isn't going to spend the extra $0.005 to stamp "Made in China" on the knife or print it on the box when the whole point is that it's cheaper. Any generic brand thing was certainly made there. What's the surprise in it not advertising it was made in China and doesn't have the fit and finish of a Leatherman?

They probably don't want to say were it was made because that design probably violates several copyright laws. The can opener and awl look an awful lot like Victorinox. The gut hook/ seatbelt cutter look like a Gerber. Many of the other tools look like a Leatherman. Buyer be ware.

I am wondering about tariffs? The tools you name have been around for many decades, so there are no copyright royalties possible.

It would depend on what the patent says in the legal mumbo jumbo and if the parent company chose to renew the patents. I don't know much about the tariffs on the US side of the border but if the product was brought into the country before the tariffs were in place they would be exempt as you could not back tax them.
