Grrr...first scratch

Just saw my first scratch on my small ebony inlay 21! I can't feel it with my nail so I'm hoping that as with my other experiences with titanium (watches, etc) that it will "heal". If you're unfamiliar with this idea...oxygen bonds to the surface of the Ti causing it to darken slightly. With watches (and hairline marks not deep ones) it simply is that the oxygen layer is removed and tge fresh Ti shows through, overtime more oxygen will bond and the mark disappears. Has anyone else noticed this on sebenzas? The damn mark is really irking me! Grrrrr.....

Just a thought - I have owned a few Panerai titanium watches, and learned from that forum that many scratches, rubs and especially superficial swirls can be safely and easily removed with a product called Sandflex or Gerryflex. It is cheap, and one block of it lasts forever. Amazon has it, as do other places - generally runs $5 or less per block of the stuff. Comes in 3 grits; the fine works wonders on Panerai's. I have both fine and medium - and have used the medium for deeper marks.

It will result in a fine brushed finish - that (using the fine grit) matches the factory finish on the polished face of the scales. If you try it on the bead blasted edge though, it will remove that surface and tend to polish it.
So would say it is only good for the face of the scales. Once used - it too results in a surface that quickly oxidizes, and looks great even in bright light.

Not sure it is appropriate here, but I could add a link to where I learned of this product from my favorite Panerai watch site.
Note - I have zero financial interests here - just trying to be helpful. Those rubs, swirls on my Panerai can drive me crazy - and this is a great effective solution. I have tried it on SS, but it just does not work on that like it does on titanium.
Sorry I do not have any photos to send you at the moment.
Best,
Dr. Ernie

Here is the link for all -

Figured if many folks can use it on a watch that costs between $4-10k, why not give it a try on a CRK. Though I have only one Panerai at the moment (SS, not Ti) - I have used this on some Ti Panerai's I once owned - and it worked wonders!
The link above is nice as it shows several photos - for this forum you can obviously ignore the sapphire scratch part, but it shows well what Sandflex or Garryflex can do. :-)))
Cheers -

Funny how things come full circle, Ernie I believe I may have bought a PAM 89 from you back in the day, say 7-8 years ago. I would say enjoy your knife as it was meant to be enjoyed not safe-queened nor abused, same philosophy I have with my watches. Good to see you around these parts.

Jorge,
First - you are 100% correct "I would say enjoy your knife as it was meant to be enjoyed not safe-queened nor abused".
Second, if you are Jorge A. - then according to my list of watch references - I bought from you a PAM 25 some time ago... if not, then at a minimum we share similar interests!

Best,
Ernie

My classic large micarta "healed". I dropped in a parking lot, saw very noticable handle scratches and in a couple days they were gone. I'm glad to know that can happen, I had been keeping that story to myself out of labeled as crazy fear.

wow, that link was incredible...i need to get "Gerryflex"!!!

Thanks docernie!

Nope wrong Jorge, I'm Jorge P. I guess I dealt with another Dr. Ernie (weird):)

I think scratches and marks add character to the knife. Shows that you actually use the things.

when I got my first sebenza I thought I had to baby it since it was a high dollar tool!

After I used it light a few times I accidentally scraped the pocket clip on concrete I thought I was devastated.

Now have finally come to realize that a sebenza is a high precision tool that is meant to be used, it can be used hard, sure you might get some scratches but think of them as your own custom engraving.
