Hey guys finished my first knife...........except for the FINISH!! What I mean is I blued the steel to an almost black chrome before I glued the scales and everything it was looking decent until I dropped it for the 4th or 5th time right on the point. Reprofiled the the point and in the process ended up sanding all the bluing off.

I decided what the heck Ill wait to blue it again until I am done with the tung oil on my handle so I gave it quite a few coats and decided to blue it a few times so I can post pics for you guys and what do you know ...got some dried tung oil on the steel around the handle that wont take the bluing. Iv tried acetone then mineral spirits but neither worked.

I guess its back to the sandpaper. Any suggestions??

I would recommend making a small brass chisel out of scrap and using that. it won't mar the steel and should be able to get the oil off.

denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner......

I have to ask a stupid question, why is it you keep dropping your knife??????????????????????????????????

I'm with Rob! Hold onto that sucker!!!

Seriously, growing pains can get you down but you'll get it! Looking forward to some pics when it's all said and done:thumbup:

If you're not working on the blade, wrap it up, that helps when you drop it too. I always leave extra around the point just so I don't stab a fingertip or something. This way you don't scratch, scuff, discolor... the metal you just spent all that time working on. It's not fool proof, but it helps cut down the odds and reduce the damage when it does happen.

Just gotta keep working on it, sometimes it's a pain, but it's worth it in the end.

Hey thanks for all the responses guys it means alot.

HAHA as for the reason Iv dropped it so many times........ Its actually kind of sad not one of those times was I actually working on the darn thing. I would get done for the evening sweep up my little tiny work area have quite a few and want to go back there and just stare at my creation. I actually dropped it 3 times in one night, every time on the point for some reason. I reprofiled twice that night and after the third time set it down and decided to wait till the next day to start again. The fourth time was the same scenario. I have learned to look at it over the workbench now and not walk around trying to get different lighting on it. Its nothing special (lowes steel) and looks completely different than it did after 4 reprofiling efforts. LOL it might be a piece of crap but its MY piece of crap haha.

as for the whole oil deal I went ahead and put some 800 grit on it hopefully the bluing will absorb but if it doesnt I will just post pics of it anyway.

Once again thanks for all the advice guys and putting up with my newbie questions.

BTW........ to any other newbs reading this, there is nothing wrong with using weld steel to practice on but listen to these guys when they say it WILL NOT HARDEN!!! I could probably bend this thing in half with one hand if I tried hard enough.
