I'm considering buying a Grundig FR200 SOS Radio shortwave radio. It has a hand crank, so batteries or AC aren't necessary. How good is this radio? Are they any other hand-crank radios that are better?

I have that radio. Only used it for a short period before placing it into our BOB gear. The radio seems ok. I think though, that if someone got over zellous with the crank, they could do it in pretty quick. I did crank it up for several minutes and it worked very well and wouldn't hesitate to make use of it in an emergency. Until then, it's our boombox all the way.:D

Grundig shortwaves are awesome!I have one I have used for years on backpacking and other camping trips.Even dropped it in the river once and it still played.I have had the same batteries in it for over a year and it plays great as they use very little power.Mine is the traveller2 7 band series(very light).I once was listening to it on a remote section of whitewater on an overnighter and caught a station out of texas that was playing old 40's radio programs like the green hornet and such ,very cool sitting by the river sippin suds and listening to that!I have two Grundigs and love them both you just cant go wrong with them.

i bought one about a month ago and i'm REALLY happy with it...i have a grundig "yacht boy" which cost around $200 and i figured there was no way this plastic $40 FR200 was gonna' be any good...but i was very pleasantly surprised with the excellent reception...for $40, you can't go wrong with this thing...

Bought one of these low cost Grundigs from Radio Shack some time ago, not a bad idea for a bugout kit but the rechargable battery it uses is a Nicad that a cordless phone uses. I found after about a year that it wouldnt take much of a charge.....Need to get a replacement battery or perhaps a whole new unit.

I also bought a Hand Crank Philips awhile ago model AE1000, I cranked it up for a few minutes in the September and the damned thing is still running on one charge. Thats based on turning it on and listening to it for a few minutes every now and again as well as leaving it on for about 8 hours to listen to the Greycup. I would highly recommend it except its only AM/FM, it doesnt include SW.

I am starting to look at backing up these hand crank devices with Lithium AA batteries in case the internal rechargable batteries fail.
