I haven't put a lot of miles on mine yet, but so far I've been pretty happy with it. The executive summary is that it's a good general purpose knife, but folks with larger hands might find the handle a bit small. And the details:
The corners on the handle are rounded a bit and I find it more comfortable that I remember the SRK being. I only handled the SRK in the store, but I seem to remember it's handle being pretty squared off on the corners, which is why I didn't buy one. The one thing you'll want to be aware of is that the handle isn't overly long. You're only looking at 3 3/4" of finger room. My hands fall between a medium and a larger for glove size and I'm okay with it, but if you wear anything bigger than a size large glove, I think you'll feel like you don't have enough room on the handle. It makes it so that you have to grip it pretty tight when you are chopping to keep your fingers from getting jammed back into that little tail at the end, but you do have a pretty secure grip.
The blade is quite stout, is very nicely finished, and has a very good convexed edge. It held up well during a 40 minute session of chopping small (1 to 1 1/2") branches into short sections using a chopping block. Obviously it doesn't have the mass of a big chopper so you have to generate a fair bit of arm speed to chop effectively. I didn't try batoning with it, but the blade is so stout that I can't imagine it not working just fine. It worked well for fuzz sticks and did a nice job of shaving strips of wood off of sticks.
I took it into the kitchen and did the following:
-Sliced steak into cubes for kebabs. It did great.
-Peeled potatoes. It did better than I expected. I thought it would be pretty difficult because of the size of the blade. It didn't take long to get the hang of it and it did just fine, although it is a bit larger blade than I would prefer for the job.
-Diced potatoes and carrots. Cut smoothly once I figure out that a rocking motion works better than slicing or push cutting. I assume that's because of the curvature of the edge.
Edge holding seemed to be very good.
I think it would do just fine dressing big game. It's certainly stout enough, and the blade shape will work well for skinning.
The other knife that I have in the same general size is a Benchmade 156CSK, which I think is comparable to the SRK but with a handle that I found more comfortable. I could be happy with either one. I think all three of the knives retail for approximately the same amount of money and I think they are all good buys for the price.
