I just got a grunting, I am not sure if I like it or not, I thought it looked cool but after holding it in differant grips I am not sure about its tactical use. Is there a video or something Frank put out on this rhino knife?? It was kind of pricey so what are everyones thoughts on EDCing this guy?

Gunting...I used to own one...until i sold it. It wasn't a good EDC, and I didn't like how the blade was not secure in the closed position.

Bram Frank's Gunting is a very specialized tool, intended for use with the self-defense system he espouses. It is a knife, yes, but it is not, first and foremost, intended as a daily utility blade. I would not recommend the purchase of a Gunting to anyone who does not also become familiar with the system intended for its application.

That said, the Spyderco Guntings exhibit the same fine craftsmanship and attention to fit and finish that the rest of Spyderco's product line does.

If you're unsure about it, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. :D

It's a specialized MBC knife. You'd have to check around for a video. I couldn't find any.

You can always go over to http://www.cssdsc.com, register for Bram Frank's forum, and talk to the man himself. He should have some DVDs for sale that go over the basics of the system or you could register for one of his seminars. The Lapu Lapu Corto is Bram's current incarnation of the Gunting, and DVDs concerning its use are available at http://www.cherusker-messer.de. The company is in Germany and the website is in German, but they have an "English-speaking customer" page and take orders from the U.S.

I have multiple Guntings and consider the design to be outstanding. I regularly EDC (when not in a business suit) a 440V plainedge Gunting. If you decide not to contact Bram or buy the DVDs, email me or PM me with questions and, when time permits, I'll do my best to answer your questions. A seminar with Bram is your best (but priciest) option, followed by Bram's DVDs.

When I took the promotion to Stupervisor, errr, Supervisor, I put away the SWAT gear and put on the suit. I go out with my task force guys and agents when I can--in fact I hear an operation calling my name right now---maybe tomorrow will be a "tactical rig" day:D

If you really must pry (and you must, I am sure), here I am in all my business attire glory:

At least there is a good knife and a couple of handguns on display:cool:

Ahhh, I see. Very helpful, thanks! I dont have mine with me at work but I think it is a PE/SE CMP 440V blade as well. Bram's forum seems to be down.

It's definitely a very cool knife and very effective in the hands of someone trained to use it. I actually had the pleasure/pain of having Bram demonstrate the abilities of the knife in the non-open position, on me. The concept of being able to use it as a compliance tool and then escalate the level of force as the situation changes is very interesting and I think it's a matter of time before his designs catch on.

It certainly is possible to utilize it for utility. However, it isn't the best suited in that role. Just by nature of the design, it takes more dedication for carry as it is so wide with the pointy triangle, it will likely be less comfortable than many other knives on the market. That doesn't matter if it is dedicated to the defense for which it is designed, however.

IMO, if you want to carry it pocket style, it is best to have it in a pocket dedicated only to the knife. If you go fumbling about the knife pocket for other gear, I believe there to be a higher chance of causing an unintended opening of the blade...which is bad for your hand and/or leg.

There are some handy kydex sheaths floating about for it to remove the pocket concern.

Secret Agent man: hows life: Just back from doing Titos ATF Anti Gang boys in NYC...
Ok the knife part: If you think it opens too easily tighten the pivot pin, Everything is adjustable on a Gunting. Kudos to Spyderco for making me a 427 Cobra of a knife. The ramp makes it very easy to access the tool from ones pocket and when one stops TRYING to stuff it DEEPLY into ones pocket..its right there. Thats a hint: its a gross motor skill tool...
Its a great EDC edged tool that one cannot slip up the handle..You can pry with the ramp, hammer with the ramp..we descale fish with the ramp..
If you shoot you'll find the correct grip easily. Not a shooter? sit back further than you'd think on the handle.. you'll find its ergonomics are great in forward or reverse,
(yes it and all its current variations make use of the natural shooting and martial arts grip..lower three fingers locking into the thumb pad to hold it..trigger finger free to move and thumb ready to decock, drop the mag, release the lock..whatever..
It can open things /cut things without opening the blade all the way..Its called Pacmanning..works great on seatbelts, flex cuffs etc..lines / sheets on a boat.. chip bags..etc Khyber Tac guys rarely open it more than Pac manning..
As for the site / forum its been up for all these years..ROFL ..Just updated to latest anti Spam version of forums..for the last couple of years its been on a restricted LE server to prevent spam: thank you CIS/S2 for putting me away from the bad cyber guys.
Yes its STILL open to the public..the forums that is..I was just there..
As for needing to know what I do and the system: that's an urban myth....It's an edged tool...It needs no special training to use it unless you want to do SDR ( Self Defense Response) with it instead of it being an EDC. Its used in set making on Broadway, Rescue teams, Security teams..I personally use it fishing and hunting...
Its been carried for 10 years now. We make many versions of it..
Again thanks to Spyderco for making the Classic 427 AC Cobra version...of course I carry one of my newer versions now. Hey Secrect Agent man..Gotta run..Need to be teaching Metro Dade w/ Shuki & JJ tomorrow...its a long drive. Drop me a line or call? OK?
be safe
Bram
