So I tried to charge my solar g-shock up using a pretty intense artificial lamp (see one of my previous threads), and negated to consider heat issues. Several hours later, I picked up the watch to find that it was extremely hot. The LCD screen had turned completely black. It was about at this point where I promply flipped out, and probably would have **** my pants had I not taken one several minutes prior. Breaking 100+ dollar watches is not my forte.

But then I was quickly reminded that we are talking about G-shocks here. The watch quickly manned up after I took it out of the path of light. As it cooled down, the LCD screen cleared up again. Now it's like it was before, everything appears to be still functioning.

I'm impressed.

The goddam battery still isn't charged up though... :(

Give em' hell.

Live and learn...(At least this turned out ok for you.). Sunlight is by far the best light source to keep these solar watches charged.

Midget...
Check the manual... it recommends up to (IIR) 72 hours under artificial light to recharge. Living in Seattle, that's the route I have to take. So far, as it's new, I haven't had much problem, but I'm using a halogen bulb, @10 inches away, each nite while I'm winding down... Won't know if this works over time yet (no pun intended!) until I run it through a complete cycle...
My beef, so far, is I can't use the auto-time update due to no signal in my apartment! And I haven't figured out the "DST" yet... I hate setting my watch at nite and waking up to it set for an hour ahead cause the signal DID get thru!
Oh well, I'll figure this out, too...

The Auto-EL sent my Tough Solar down to low battery mode a couple weeks ago. I put it on the truck dashboard on a sunny day while I went grocery shopping. The watch was red hot went I got back to the truck and the display had gone back. Everything came back when it cooled off, except for the "high level" battery indicator. Either that or the battery is part fried from overheating. No matter how long I charge, the charge only displays up to medium.

The Tough Solar is a very tough watch, but is definitely susceptible to extreme heat.
