I have days were I can appreciate the serenity of tea outdoors. But most days I need a freakin coffee I.V. jammed into my arm, just to open my lids half an hour later. I have never even heard of a Coffee press before, but the idea is intriquing. Anyone use these things ? Are they ok ?, junk ?

Coffee presses work great, course grounds in, water, wait a couple minutes, and plunge. I had a GSI lexan press-pot. definitely not built for every day use (it lasted over a year averaging two pots a day, so not bad for an outdoor bit of kit) Eventually the plunger plastic hardened up and cracked, and by then the sides were fairly scratched. I also had a insulated french press mug. only problem was that I would make the coffee, push the plunger, and then have to wait an hour for the coffee to cool enough to drink!

Press coffee is great if you like your coffee kicking strong, and don't mind a few chunks.

French presses (a.k.a. java presses) make great coffee, depending on the beans. Use French Roast. Add a good cigar or a pipe of the best. Sit back and enjoy.

I have one.

The larger one. My only complaint is it's somewhat heavy. The other complaint is due to the design it is somewhat difficult to fill the thing with other stuff.

You'd have to unscrew the bottom off the plunger and take the plunger out. in order to fill the container with anything. If you don't do that all the open space inside the press is wasted in your pack.

I have several French-Press coffee makers - including a GSI Lexan, an insulated "Big-Country" press-mug, a large (12-cup) Bodum, an Ikea 6-cup, etc - and they are capable of making an excellent cup 'o java. In fact, when i'm wanting a "good" cup of coffee, my big Bodum is the 1st choice.

However, I rarely use French-presses for backpacking anymore - i'm usually wanting my coffee/hot drink poured and ready as i'm cooking my meal/setting up camp. They worked OK for what they are, but i'm pretty much past using them in the back-country.

I have one, and it works fine. As a bonus, the carafe and the cup are useful for non-coffee duties as well, so it is a good supplement to my messware.

There was an older version that I also have and it was terrible. The current one is much better.

I was using single serving instant coffee packets over the weekend... but they just dont taste right

I have one of these. Makes the best coffee i have ever had. WAY better than our Kureg.

Was in REI today and found this... I figure for less than 6 bucks I would give it a try

coffee grounds go in the little canister, it pops into the bottom, fill with hot water in the top and let it do its thing... at any rate its gotta be better than instant
