GSM just bought SOG

Someday there will only be one huge multinational mega knife maker if they keep acquiring companies.
Looks that way, doesn’t it? Well, I’m hoping to score one more Recon 1 without the new logo…basically new “old” stock and that will be it for me. Happy New Year to everyone! Hoping 2022 will bring some good news and we can all get back to living normal lives again

So much of SOG was already big box store stuff.
On the other hand, Cold Steel wasn't, at least not while under Lynn Thompson's ownership.

I see GSM is still marketing many of the Cold Steel weapon products as, well... as weapons. Heck, they even incorporate Lynn in some of that marketing.
That's a good sign, it tells me that they are not shying away from Cold Steels roots 👍👍

I agree, but with a (big!) grain of salt.

You can bring home your groceries with a Maserati MC20, but you can't market it as a utilitarian car.

GSM is only doing the obvious, which includes the use of Lynn's image.

I may be wrong of course, but that's what I see.

I'm a bit shocked that anyone would actually want SOG.

They have some interesting IP, but haven't been much of a knife manufacturer in some time.

The XR lock models from the last couple years have gotten pretty decent reviews actually. Agree the period between those and Seki models were trash though.

Yeah, they went straight from Seki models to flea market level very quickly. :)

CS will probably bring back some of the more popular SOG designs and make them from questionable steel.

Oh, please don't misunderstand me on my observations of current Cold Steel marketing.
I mean, yes, I see GSM not showing signs of political correctness with their handling of Cold Steel products, is a good thing in my eyes.
But, it has nothing to do with any other things that they may or may not be doing with the brand.

I'm curious to know in which point I did misunderstood you...

Yes, they're not completely stupid and the fact that they are doing "the obvious" proves it. They are doing their job; and to misrepresent the stuff they sell would be a faux pas. It's a good thing? I agree! But you call it a "good sign", and I call it "just basic common sense".

And frankly, to see Lynn Thompson acting as a cover boy was very nice when he was also the soul of CS. I frankly don't like to see him appearing in the new context, but of course this is a totally different topic.

I only have one sog. It's a SOG Pentagon double-edged dagger. I don't know if it's still made I've had it for a long time. But if it Stiill is made I have a feeling it's going bye bye

Yes, I do consider GSM not taking the Cold Steel firm down the "politically correct" route, a "good sign".
In today's world, the pressure to go politically correct, is more and more the norm. So many were ecstatic in thinking that the new CS would stop, or at least tone down, the weapon marketing of their products. That does not seem to be happening at all... So, yes, common sense or not, I see that as a good sign 👍😊👍

Then you (we) have nothing to worry about!
The "politically correct" is a Western trend, and Cold Steel isn't American anymore. 🐼

Interesting..... yes, sadly, SOG is just a shell of what it was. Up until 2015 or so, they still had lots of cool knives and quality multi-tools -- the SOG Force in AUS8 (Better than the SRK in my opinion, and I love the SRK), Northwest Ranger, the excellent SOG Flash folders in AUS8, great multi-tools that were smooth as butter, etc. They also made a Glock style shovel that had a better hand tightening system than the original Glock shovel. I have used mine for years and it is awesome. Then they went down the "Road to Communist China" and very little is left of SOG's greatness.

About the only good fixed blade knife left under $100 is the SOG Seal Pup Elite in AUS8. Now would probably be a good time to grab one before they come out with the "4034" version that costs more (yikes). The AUS8 Seal Pup Elite in Straight Edge is a nice little survival blade and definitely worth grabbing before GSM revamps or puts the axe to it.
