Gso 3v > sr101 or vice versa?

I am waiting on first gso (pre-order) and hoping this will be "the one" favourite all-round knife. Until then I am fishing around for comparible reviews on other notible brands such as swamp rat.

Does anyone feel like sharing their 2 cents on comparing gso with other notible brands including SR?

Any opinions and experience would be great :)

I've been a fan of the RMD for some time. It's been the knife I take...wherever. I did a post where I kind of compared the RMD to the 5.1. I'm still learning the finer points of the 5.1 and 3V. Since you are waiting for a pre-order I am assuming it isn't for the 5.1. Maybe the 4.7?

In summary, I think the GSO 5.1/4.7 are better made knives as far as attention to detail goes. When I first got the 5.1 I thought the RMD was much more comfortable but I think I have changed my mind on that. I like how the 5.1 fills my hand. The 4.7 felt more comfortable right from the start. The RMD now feels a little thin. I wear medium or large gloves depending on brand. Both the 3V and SR-101 take and keep a really sharp edge. I personally have never had issues with SR-101 rusting despite reports that it can do so fairly easily (I live outside Seattle where the woods can be wet). To date, I haven't had any issues with 3V on that score either. I thought the geometry on the RMD was pretty good but that's until I got the 5.1/4.7. They have a thinner profile and do a little better on finer wood working/bushcraft tasks than the RMD. I much prefer the uncoated blade of the 5.1 (4.7 is one of the samples so it's coated). The RMD's coating creates a lot of friction and I sanded it smooth (on all my coated BusseKin blades) so it would move through wood a little better.

It's not that the RMD is a poor performer. It's actually a great knife and has served me well for a couple of years (and probably still will). With the few things that the 5.1/4.7 do a little better, in my opinion they both edge out the RMD for the way I use knives.

I could, in good conscience, recommend either. But I would have to say Survive! would be my first choice.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the extended response, that certainly helps!
I was first stuck on trying to snag a 5.1 during monday sales and instead settled on a 6. Now I am glad i went with the 6 instead of the 5 due to a little extra blade length plus new HT that is coming in for models after 4.1

In terms of asthetics (because thats all i can judge the gso and swamp rats on due to not owning either of the two brands yet) i prefer all gso models > swamp rats.
On paper 3v should be better than 52100 so your answer is reassuring and helpful!

I have a RMD in INFI(no coating, reprofiled to a razor), and a new 5.1 coming in a day or two.
I'll post pics and notes.
From everything I've heard, the new HT is great, and definitely has put Survive! right up in the echelon of Busse and kin.
Gotta hand it to Guy and Ellie, your hard work and dedication has paid off, every time someone mentions "toughest knife",, you hear "Busse, Survive!,Swamprat "

This is a great observation. As far as I can tell, SURVIVE! has really only had a presence for about 3 years. Considering how well loved his product is and how highly rated the performance and quality are, that definitely speaks volumes about the people behind the company!

Busse, Survive, and Swamprat are about all I'm interested in anymore.
The GSO has the best edge geometry. Period. Depending on whether you get a Swamprat or Busse, the edges can vary dramatically. Usually the edges I get from Swamprat are below my personal standards and sharpening ability, so they usually get fixed before they are even used, or certainly used much. The SR-101 I've had come in from Busse (Battle Grade) often are sharpened by someone called "Beef." His edges are grab and go. He does his edges right, even when the bevel is thick behind the edge. Never been disappointed in one of Beef's edges.

The only Bussekin blade than can approach the edge geometry of Survive is the MUK that Chiral.Grolim had in his video review, and the SWATmandu. You might as well not even look for one of those, though. I'm buying up all of them I can find. 😉 While waiting for my several GSO'sto come in.

I'm heading out camping with some guys from the Busse forum, can't wait to see all these blades out playing together..
Busses, Swamp rats, Survive!, Nathan Carothers, RMJ's, and my Gransfors SFA.
Should make for some epic pics

Just might make a convert or two out of some of them Busse boys.

Don't you dare go spreading that around the Ussebe ubforumse. :D

Oh don't get me wrong, I am a diehard Busse/kin fan for life! I have nothing but the utmost respect for Jerry and his product however like most, I enjoy different flavors of my toys and can't wait to try out Survive!
On top of that all of the people over there are absolutely the coolest and nicest, One thing that drew me to Survive! was the people here on this forum. Everyone seems to be very cool and helpful. It's a shame that some other forums are a little too much like a boys clubs, lots of bickering and not very polite to newcomers.
Thanks all! I hope that one day I can call myself an honorary "survivor"
