Not to get anyone's hopes up here, I haven't tried it yet. This morning my 6 year old daughter asked if we could get some coconuts and open them. Of course I said yes. So... The question now is how to best open one (preferably kid safe if possible). Will a 4.1 work to crack around the coconut? Should I just let her whack it with a hammer a few times? I could always just use a machete, but that doesn't really let her be involved much. Any suggestions?

Don't forget to poke the eye and save the milk. After that, it's ip to you. They're tough. I'd be curious how 3V would hold up. I would keep the little one far away. Take another one, wrap it in an old towel and let her bust it up with a hammer!

What a tease, I was hoping for a series of pics of mass destruction! :p

I think jdk1 has the safest idea as far as using the towel and hammer.

As far as getting the 4.1 involved, could you drain it then put it in a vice to hold it steady then tap the blade edge into it just like you would cross baton a big piece of wood?

I used a machete to open coconuts - AFTER removing the husk.
Depending on how old the coconut is, a concrete block or brick might be a little bit "softer" than the coconut.

The 4.1 has a "hammer" on the butt, use that .A 6 yo doesn't have the strength so daddy has to do it. Use a 1/4" drill [hand operated one for the kid] .Pour out the liquid. Smash with a hammer [eye protection].Cutout meat !

Agreed, the 3 hardest things in nature are: brown coconut, diamond, and a teenager's head:D

One like this, yes:

I wouldn't try it on a mature (brown) one though. Best just to tap and crack those.

As a kid with a dry brown coconut we'd poke holes through the eye with an icepick and drain the liquid into a glass, then whack it with a hammer until it split.
Sometimes we'd break it down into smaller pieces if the meat was hard to pop out of the shell.
