I am looking at trying to pick up a 5.1 on Monday here and thought I would ask a quick question. I have noticed that the handles look quite chunky considering I have smallish hands. The closest knives I have in that size range are a Bark River Bravo 1.5 and a Scrapyard 711. Both of which fit my hands well. Is the handle size on the 5.1 close to either of those? Also what handle material would you say on the 5.1 is the most comfortable?

Hello sir. I have a new model 5.1, a Bravo 2, and a 711. I believe the 1.5 and 2 barkies have the same size handles. All three handles work for me, I do love the res-c of the 711 and it may be the most comfortable. I really like the new model 5.1 handles though, they are contoured very nicely IMO. I'll try to snap a comparison shot for you this evening.

Thanks for the comparison pics. Looks like the handle size should fit me quite nicely. What handle material is that on yours?

That is the camo canvas, and that is a really bad picture of it, very dark as I was just trying to get some quick comparison shots. It looks much better in real life.

I hesitated to recommend a specific type of handle material as everybody has their preferences. I lean toward the canvas micartas as they are the most grippy when wet, and I do much more field dressing than bushcraft. I did have the previous model 5.1 in black G10 and it also felt good. I don't know that you can really go wrong, they are all extremely tough materials. I think we have a handle description thread started here somewhere, I'll take a look for it.

ETA: Bumped the handle scale photo library thread for you.
