GSO 5.1 or 4.7?

Hi guys! I missed out on those preorders for both and since all is not lost and I can still jump in on the bandwagon when the extras are made available, which would you choose? 4.7 or 5.1?

I had initially wanted the 5.1 because of the choil but somehow prefer the shorter profile of the 4.7. And since the 5.1 should reach completion first before the 4.7, should I jump on the 5.1 the moment it is available? Or should I wait out for the 4.7?

Which would you choose and what's the reason? I have a 4.1 and 7/7 on preorder.

I'm not choosing between these two. I've got a 4.7 on preorder, but I'm still grabbing a new model 5.1 as soon as I can. But, if you're undecided, I would absolutely say to pick up a 5.1 when they come up on the site. My reasons being:

-If it doesn't suit you, you can move it here in a hot second for every penny you've got in it before the 4.7s hit.
-If it does suit you, it will still be awhile before the 4.7s hit and you can rebuild funds if you decide you want both.
-It's an iconic Survive! blade, just so very capable in a wide range of tasks.
-It's maybe the best cost-to-value production blade in the industry right now, certainly near the top, if not on top. I suppose that could be said of the whole Survive! line, but when I think Survive! I think GSO 5.1.

Everything Hard Knocks said is spot on.

Eventually you will have both and then you can really figure out which one you like best and sell the other to me!

I feel like I'm going to be right about Riz being right about HK being right :)

Clearly there is the choil vs no choil and longer vs shorter between the two models. Also, think about it this way, do you want each GSO in your collection to be pretty diverse or are you OK with some overlapping? The 4.7 is only different by fractions of inches in dimensions to the 4.1 you already ordered. I kind of have this mid-size obsession going on right now so I really liked piling my 4.1 and 4.7 preorders on top of my 5. If you're a freak like me, cool. If you like the idea of each GSO being a different size suited for a different job range, then I'd say 5.1.

I would say go for the 5.1 like HR said. Plus I trend not to try to overlap my blade sizes too much. If I do I have to give one to the misses or sell one. Only so much space in the house. I need to build a special under ground bunker to house all my guns and knives.

Thank you so much guys! All your advices are great and with very valid points! I did consider about the size of the 4.7 being very close to the 4.1 which I have already ordered, and so is the 5.1 to the 7/7. If I had preordered the 8 instead of the 7/7 then the clear and obvious choice would be the 5.1.

I think I will just follow the advices here and go for the 5.1 first. If I like it then I think there is no need to consider the 4.7 but look forward to the arrival of the 4.1 which I believe is the next production batch after the 4.7. Thank you all gentlemen!

Everyone pretty much nailed it in this thread. You can't go wrong with the 5.1 considering you have the 4.1 and 7/7 on order and if memory serves me correctly, you own an Esee 3 with a choil so you already probably use that extra function. If you like the Esee choil, wait till you get a Survive! with one! Talk about comfortable.
Personally I don't mind them but I'm used to full blades so I tend to keep my index finger on the handle. I'm hoping you will remember that when you get the 4.1 because I've read a few stories of guys trying to grip the choil when there wasn't one there!

Wow! You remembered I own an Esee 3! Great memory, because I had forgotten when and where I had posted that info myself. If I am not wrong, must have been in the thread with the try stick thing.

What you have said about the choil is very true and it has been on my mind, about trying to recall which knife has a choil and which one not. I always wonder if one would ever make a blunder of grabbing for the choil when there is none. With razor sharp 3V steel, I wouldn't want to find out via the hard and painful way. On the Esee 3 the choil may not be necessary because the knife is small and light and it is easy to do fine cutting without having to use the choil at all. With 5" or longer blade length, the choil will help in adding the extra control over a heavier blade. Since I do enjoy using the choil on the Swamp Rat Infidu the 5.1 might be a better knife for me.

These are two totally different knives. It comes down to how are you going to use the knife. If you like choils then the 5.1 is your knife. If you want an EDC then the 4.7 is a little better suited because it's not as big. I've always preferred a bigger knife, like the 5.1 and 7/7, because it has more power, leverage, you can use it to baton and you can still do fine work with it. For me the 5.1 and to a degree the 7/7 is the ultimate in the woods and survival knife. Nothing wrong with the 4.7, I've got one on preorder, and it'll be my day hike in the woods knife and my 5.1 backup for over night camping trips.

Haha good old muscle memory could definitely be a problem with one of these knives! It might take a little getting used to with that 4.1 if your finger automatically goes for a choil.

I think you're right about this. I didn't know you had an RMD, so if you like it, I think you'll enjoy the 5.1 as well.

I have to admit I was staunchly in the "no choil" boat, until I got some knives with choils...in the 5.1 size range i think they can do some really interesting things with regards to getting some leverage in different use cases and I am now fairly excited about the idea of getting one of the new GSO5.1's when they hit the extras market sooo maybe get both!!:D

- Why don't you ship both to your hotel and tell us which one you liked better and why.

The RMD Infi is the first fixed blade I bought when I first started wanting a real good and solid field knife, and RMD was what caused me to go all crazy about fixed blade knives. I then started looking at Survive! and that was where I realized that I should have gone straight for a GSO 5 instead since it is lower in cost without being lower in quality. Anyway, I am glad I bought the RMD Infi because it is one hell of a knife for outdoor use, and I like the ergonomics very much. It felt like a part of my hands so I am very much looking forward to the 5.1 so I can compare them side by side.

The 5.1, 5, or 4.7 is in my opinion the most versatile size range if you are only going to carry one knife in the field. I wish I can get both as well but my wallet got thinner after a few other purchases including a Sebenza and a Spyderco PM2, and I am reserving some dough for a possible Necker 2 as well. That said, I think 5.1 will be it for me.

I am very partial to everything about the original 5.1 design, and only see that the new spec 5.1s are an improvement. My very biased opinion is that the 5.1 is a perfect size for all around use. Big enough to get large jobs done, but small enough to carry easily. If I don't have a need for doing large jobs, the 4.1 gets the nod to ride on my belt.

I do feel the same about the 5.1 too. If only I had known earlier and placed a preorder for it.
